At what point does She become a perennial candidate? At this point, she's lost races for Senate, Governor, and Mayor of Honolulu. We're starting to enter Dino Rossi/Jim Oberweis territory.

Will she end up at 3rd place in the primary yet again?

In some ways, you could argue that she already is. However, in my mind, part of being a perennial candidate is always losing or maybe winning exactly once.

I feel like it's common for Hawaii politicians to just keep on running and running, even after they've lost re-election or lost bids for higher office. Charles Djou, Mufi Hannemann, and Ed Case all come to mind, to varying degrees.

I’m surprised she doesn’t just run for her old congressional seat. She’s beaten Case before, no reason she couldn’t do it again. Unless she prefers staying in Hawaii.

I’m of the opinion that Hanabusa should have been appointed to the senate following Inyoue because that was his wish. I think that’s the least they could have given Dan after his decades of service.

I think Hanabusa should’ve run for Governor in 2014 instead of Senate. Given Abercrombie lost by 36 points in the primary, I think Hanabusa could’ve easily won that race if she had ran instead of Ige (she may have even won in a 3 way primary race against Ige and Abercrombie).

I’m kind of surprised that Case does not seem to be considering a run - he’s been ambitious in the past.

Is David Ige ineligible for a third term?

The answer to that question is the same as the answer to the question, "will you never stop using Atlas as your own personal Google?"

I guess there's little chance of a second Native Hawaiian governor, because Kai Kahele is the most prominent Native Hawaiian politician at the moment. Alan Akaka could run but that would be on pure surname basis alone.

Would endorse if she runs but I imagine she'll just end up as the democrat's Ron Paul (which is a shame because she has so much potential).

True.

And wow. I can't believe I was posting about the 2022 Hawaii Gubernatorial race on Christmas Day. I may need to get a life...

It's interesting that there are not any major candidates out in the field just yet. It's not too surprising I guess - Hawaii is a notoriously hard state to govern, if the DC press are to be believed. Maybe there's a degree of reluctance to jump in.

Also, I'd have expected Hanabusa to have made some kind of move towards running. It really would be the end of an era if she sat this one out.

Congrats that you found out about this nearly three months after initially asking, and sad that you couldn't keep this enlightening information to yourself and felt obliged to write a reply in this thread simply to increase your post count.

It's still *ge, btw.
