The NYP is steaming garbage (as usual), and AOC makes an extremely valid point again (as usual).  Probably a bad take here, but the silver lining is surely the major income bump coming through Ms Kwei's OF account thanks to this publicity, no?

The NYP is one of the best papers in America. People read it for a reason, there is a reason why there is a high circulation rate.
That doesn't mean it's good that just means it's entertaining and people enjoy reading it.

And Fox News gets the highest ratings, doesn't mean that it isn't pushing garbage on a daily basis.

Looking into it the nurse apparently asked the Post to keep her anonymous.  The reporter also appears to have called her employer to report this while writing the story.

OF isn't anonymous, so she shouldn't be surprised it got out. You can't reap the benefits of such a "job" while expecting people not to pass judgement.

What you can expect is when you talk to a reporter, only agree to an interview if you're anonymous, he says okay, and then stabs you in the back, he follows through and shuts his ass up.

This is really gross, dude. Be better.

That’s literally not even the issue here. She was not even hiding her identity to the extent that a lot of SWers do, nor does she seem to care about people passing judgement.

It’s one thing to be outed to people who know you. Basically everyone who goes into sex work knows that that can and does happen. It’s another thing entirely for a major media outlet that is read by millions to, completely unprompted and without your consent, publish your personal details in a way that can leave you in physical danger, and frame it as your personal moral failing. That’s the issue here.

The NY post already had all the info. They only contacted before publishing the article fyi and that's when she begged for anonymity.

Still bad journalism

Work is work. You gotta pay the bills somehow. She broke no law, and did nothing wrong in the eyes of the state. All of this hullabaloo about “oh no, she’s a dirty whore!” is just sour grapes. At a certain point, you do what you have to to survive in a sh**t system. 100% sympathize with her. AOC has it on the money here.

I don't agree.  While it appears you could connect her nursing career to onlyfans fairly quickly if you tried, she was not committing any crimes that needed to be exposed.  To have her whole life profiled on a national tabloid is extreme and should not be done.

It's truly bizarre that people - including some red avatars here - have a problem with somebody having an OnlyFans account.  Aren’t we beyond this weird prudery over soft core pornography?

OnlyFans not only democratises online soft core porn and voyeurism and puts consent and cash in the hands of the performer (taking it away from studio and industry exploitation) but is an activist base in itself, particularly in BLM, LGBTQ and politics.

I get the whole 'late stage capitalism' critique, but this is not a forum where people are willing to be outwardly sex positive and supportive of sex workers.

OnlyFans isn't a democracy, it's a private company owned by Leo Radvinsky.

It's not a democracy, but it democratizes the industry by letting the performers dictate the terms of their work rather than the terms being in the hands of often exploitative studios and producers.

The performers are contractors of OnlyFans... the company is in control of their work, not them. I would say the impact is to further centralize the industry, the opposite of democratization.

In the old days if you got fired by a studio or producer, you could go work for another one of similar quality. But if you get banned from OnlyFans, where are you going to find another platform with the same brand and reach? You can't.

I agree that it centralizes it in that way, but on the other hand they get to choose what they post, how often they post, where and how they market what they post, and what they charge, to their own level of comfort, and can quit at any time. As opposed to traditional studios which are notorious for manipulating desperate young people into abusive contracts and coercing performers into content that they would not otherwise consent to.

That is not what OF is replacing. OF is replacing other decentralized outlets that independent producers could make their own content and post what they want (which was already online) into a single platform for sexual content. The traditional studios' hit from the Internet already occured in the 2000s and early 2010s. What's happening now is pure centralization.

Is "sex worker" really the right term for someone who takes racy photos of herself? Are Playboy models sex workers? SI Swimsuit models?

This is despicable even for the NYPost, but I saw someone point out that, if they had to choose a second job for a paramedic to have, this would be it. Having a paramedic take on additional shifts in a more traditional industry would almost certainly contribute heavily to fatigue during a pandemic when first responders are already exhausted. And yet it seems that the NYPost is more than happy to drain the wellbeing of first responders and the people they help alike rather than advocate for increased pay or, you know, simply butt out. Just horrible. AOC is exactly right.

Make up your minds. Is it #fightfor15, or #fightfor40? Because there is no such minimum wage where everyone will be able to live the lifestyle they want. How many other paramedics (or various entry-level workers, for that matter) in NY are earning $25/hr or less? A lot. The other paramedics don't bring their fellow professionals into disrepute by saying they're a paramedic who sells porn on their Twitter bio.

I mean, the article says "to make ends meet". It must be assumed therefore that her standard paramedic salary is not enough to pay for herself and any dependants she might have. So in that case either the minimum wage in NYC should be increased, or there should be more help schemes so that people in her situation can make ends meet.

Of course it could be a bad choice of headline for the NY post and she might be using the OnlyFans account exclusively to earn more money because she wants a better lifestyle and not to make ends meet; which would be more morally debatable. But I think for now we should "believe journalists" and believe that she 100% needed her OnlyFans account in order to feed herself, pay rent, pay for the needs of any children or dependents she might have, etc.

AOC is 100% right that the scandal here is "Medics in the United States need two jobs to survive"

To be honest, I do genuinely think that stuff like Onlyfans and what not is a big net negative and shows a ton of societal problems with modern day relationships.

However, my complaints aren't really targeted towards the women who post pictures of themselves on OnlyFans; but rather on the pepople who pay for those pictures (or their "cousins" of simps and people who obsess with certain streamers online). After all, in order to "sell" a product, you need people who will buy it.

Platforms like OnlyFans aren't the problem but they are a symptom of broader societal problems.

I mean there's always going to be voyeurism. There always has been. The question is who controls it and for me that's the person who is producing it. Their content, their rules, their 'do's' and 'dont's'. OnlyFans is a market platform, like every other but for now gives creators control.

I don't think there's a deep 'societal problem' when a happily married gay couple run an OnlyFans with a bit of racy content, bakery, dog care and political activism. I think it's too broad for that sort of diagnosis. If there's economic coercion because of low pay, rather than creators doing it for fun, then the issue there is with economic inequality, not 'sex'. And that's what needs to be adressed.
