It annoys me that the same press who are careful to cover up the discretions of the great and good, out private citizens for clicks.

Despicable. Classic Post (and classic online sex industry if we're being honest). What a world we live in.

I’m not sure that the New York Post is fit to line a bird cage with if it came to my door for free (and if I had a bird).

Imagine shaming somebody for their (perfectly fine) choice of profession when you're literally a writer for the New York Post.

The New York Post doesn't even deserve to be used as a fire starter.

Sorry, there needs to be some standards in her line of work, and she should not be engaging in conduct that brings her coworkers and fellow paramedics into disrepute. I would (almost) be sympathetic if she didn't simultaneously advertise both that she was a paramedic and made porn on Twitter, but the fact is she chose to put the two together, chose to speak with the Post, and her actions show she knew what she was doing was against the terms of her employment. I'm sorry, but as sleazy as we all know the Post is, there is little to sympathize with this young woman on. The only thing I will say is that everyone, especially young people, make mistakes, and hopefully she will be given a second chance and learn to, at a minimum, have a little more discretion in the future.

You know I love you, brucejoel, but "choice of profession" is a weird way to describe selling lingerie pics online because your job as a first responder doesn't pay you enough to live on. This kind of framing is why I'll never be fully on board with the "sex work is work" orthodoxy even though I do support decriminalization.

This is despicable even for the NYPost, but I saw someone point out that, if they had to choose a second job for a paramedic to have, this would be it. Having a paramedic take on additional shifts in a more traditional industry would almost certainly contribute heavily to fatigue during a pandemic when first responders are already exhausted. And yet it seems that the NYPost is more than happy to drain the wellbeing of first responders and the people they help alike rather than advocate for increased pay or, you know, simply butt out. Just horrible. AOC is exactly right.

Make up your minds. Is it #fightfor15, or #fightfor40? Because there is no such minimum wage where everyone will be able to live the lifestyle they want. How many other paramedics (or various entry-level workers, for that matter) in NY are earning $25/hr or less? A lot. The other paramedics don't bring their fellow professionals into disrepute by saying they're a paramedic who sells porn on their Twitter bio.

I mean, it's incredibly shameful on the part of her employer that they don't pay enough to get by without having to have a cam gig on the side, yes, but let's not pretend anybody would give a sh*t if her 2nd job was just being a waitress or a cab driver or something like that. The only reason that anybody is even wringing their hands over this in the 1st place is because the shaming thereof has become ingrained. If it wasn't shamed, nobody would care. The very idea that it's shamed is itself part of the problem here.

Making money on only fans isn't as embarrassing as some jobs, like being a "journalist" at the NY Post.

1. I don't think it's disrepute, and if they (or you) do that's their problem, not this person's.
2. Frankly, I think the minimum wage should probably be higher than $15 in NYC.
3. There's a pretty clear difference between being a paramedic in one of the most populous, most densely populated areas in the world during a pandemic and those other entry level jobs you hypothesize which probably incurs additional time, fatigue, and untold other hidden costs.

This stigmatization is exactly the problem though. Sex work shouldn't be seen as as a mistake that will ruin your life and the lives of anyone who associates with you if you are not discrete to the most extreme degree. As long as her sex work isn't affecting her ability to perform at her paramedic job, it shouldn't matter, and shaming her for her actions rather than shaming 1) her employer/industry for not paying living wages or 2) the stigmatized culture around sex work is pretty unhelpful.

I would (maroon avatar, normal), but as far as the general public is concerned, yeah, I see what you mean.

So you're saying the minimum wage should be much higher than $25. Where does it end?

Vice, including things like prostitution, illegal (and even legal, to an extent) gambling, pornography, illegal drug use, irresponsible legal drug use, and criminal behavior, is, by established social norms, considered disreputable and antisocial. Occasionally and discreetly partaking in the above activities is widely tolerated as an understandable deviance from social norms, but for someone in a position of public trust like a paramedic to publicly combine her job with one of these activities is beyond the pale, and brings her profession into disrepute.

The NYP is steaming garbage (as usual), and AOC makes an extremely valid point again (as usual).  Probably a bad take here, but the silver lining is surely the major income bump coming through Ms Kwei's OF account thanks to this publicity, no?

Probably why she agreed to speak with the Post. It'll turbocharge her earnings and bring her a national audience.

Did she not choose to speak to the Post?  While I'd have a problem with them exposing her without her knowledge it sounds like she chose to speak to them aware that she would end up the focus of an article.

The NYP is one of the best papers in America. People read it for a reason, there is a reason why there is a high circulation rate.
