I have always have heard of Top Gun as a iconic movie that was big in the 80s. However I watched the Top Gun on Amazon Prime yesterday and the movie is really boring and sort of slow.

No disrespect to any Top Gun fans out there, but why is this movie so famous even so that it is even in the National film by the us library of Congress?

Btw I'm still interested in Top Gun 2, I think it might be interesting as it made for today's audiences but I'll wait

The jet stuff was kind of cool, but the real reason it was so big was nationalism.

It's quotable, has an iconic soundtrack, and starred one of the biggest stars of the era. Nobody thinks it was a great movie, but it was obviously an iconic one.

I don't know either. I never cared for the movie. I find it yet another schmaltzy, dated vestige of an overrated era in American history.

Stupidity and military worship.

But I repeat myself.

I am a liberal and I love the chest thumping nationalism of 80's movies like Top Gun, Rocky and Rambo. It's a guilty pleasure.

Top Gun is a great film.

Kelly McGillis was so hot.

At the time, I went to the cinema in 1986 with my girlfriends and mates, this was a world-wide sensation.

The musical score is amazing. The footage was ground breaking.

Tom Cruise was the biggest star in Hollywood.

I wouldn't call it an Academy Award winner, but it is a great film.

It's a strong encapsulation/condensation of so much of Reagan's America from near the peak of his reign, and it's brimming with the homoerotic undertones of so much sweaty machismo: a potent double shot of primal power within the confines of Hollywood corn. I don't care for it personally, but it's easy to imagine the impact of a hard mixture of military posturing, romance, and Kenny Loggins on the audience of the time, and it fascinates me as a cultural phenomenon and period piece.

I think Iron Eagle is a much better movie.
