Finally bringing this back from the dead, although in a more "sh**t that comes to mind" format than something linear, though I will have a table of contents that organizes things into a somewhat sensical order. There are two points of divergence in this TL, the first being Mike Gravel and Robert Morgan winning re-election in 1980, the second being Jim Hunt winning election to the Senate in 1984 and Gary Hart winning the Democratic nomination in 1984. As such, this timeline will mostly cover the 50 (well, 52, but who's counting?) years following Hunt's election to the Senate.

The 2018 North Carolina Democratic Party leadership election was formally triggered on November 15, 2018 by the death of Beverly Perdue, NCDP leader since the previous leadership contest on March 18, 2017. The election followed the 2018 North Carolina general election, in which the NCDP defeated the NCGOP, winning 86 seats to the NCGOP’s 84.

From the start, most observers considered Congresswoman Rachel Hunt the overwhelming favorite to succeed Perdue; MLA Joel Ford, her only challenger, failed to submit enough signatures in order to get onto the ballot and, when ballot access closed on December 22, conceded defeat, declaring Hunt the state’s premier-elect. A special conference a week later declared Hunt the leader of the party, and on January 1, 2019, Hunt became Premier of North Carolina. Acting leader Dan Blue would serve as assembly leader from December 29, 2018 to May 24, 2019, when Hunt was elected to a seat in the legislative assembly.
