https://www.cbsnews.com/news/oan-suspended-youtube-covid-19-misinformation/

Quote
YouTube has suspended the One America News Network (OANN) channel for repeated violations of the video platform's policy on sharing COVID-19 misinformation, YouTube confirmed Tuesday. The channel has also been demonetized as a result of the suspension, YouTube added.

"Since early in this pandemic, we've worked to prevent the spread of harmful misinformation associated with COVID-19 on YouTube. After careful review, we removed a video from OANN and issued a strike on the channel for violating our COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits content claiming there's a guaranteed cure," YouTube said in a statement. "Additionally, due to repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy and other channel monetization policies, we've suspended the channel from the YouTube Partner Program and as a result, its monetization on YouTube."

YouTube has a three-strikes policy before it removes an account. OANN's channel is still live, but the strike means it cannot upload new videos or start new live streams for a week. To make money off videos going forward, OANN will have to reapply to the YouTube Partner Program. Readmittance to the program will require the account to rectify any issues that led to the suspension.

In this case, it should have been done long ago based on misinformation. Generally YouTube does too much censoring though and is a sad joke.

What fake news do “we” like?

I hate all fake news because it distorts the truth. I want even an unpleasant truth over even a pleasant lie at all times. It disturbs me that apparently that’s not the case for nearly half the country.

Conservative platforms or infiltration into mainstream platforms are so toxic.

YouTube's main problem is copyright paranoia. Given it's history, it's an understandable paranoia.

They've been going hard with demonetization of topics they don't like, especially very specific left wing stuff in my limited experience.

All or part of CNN, MSNBC, NYT, TYT, etc are the ones that are "ok" on YouTube.

Literally none of those outlets stoop to the level of outright fabricating news stories, which is what OANN does.

Are you that naïve or are you trying to split hairs on "fabricating news stories" and "taking a real news story and giving false information/exaggerations"?

Remember how enthusiastically he supported Warren after she came out for breaking up Facebook and Google?

He sure is a crusader against monopoly.

Who determines what is and is not fake news? And how do we come to a consensus on whether or not those who're making those determinations are reliable?

That isn't splitting hairs. Real news outlets issue corrections, do fact-checking, and have actual investigative journalism departments.

But also, I do think that TYT should come with a disclaimer about how they are political commentary, not a valid source of news.

Does anybody get this channel in their lineup? Youtube clips are the only way I've been able to watch it. And their production quality seems pretty low.

That is hardly "splitting hairs". There is a big difference between biased tone and outright making things up. That's the reason Fox does not constitute 'fake news" either.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. OANN is living in fact free world.

It's time to treat Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. like publishers.  Remove their protections from lawsuits if they are going to deplatform people and institutions; let them be treated like the publishers they are.

So like... hear me out. Youtube is a business, Conservatives say the government shouldn't intervene in private business. Youtube is private, the government shouldn't intervene in youtube.

No website owes anyone a "platform."

Forcing websites to host certain kinds of content sounds like SOCIALISM.

"Platform" is not a literal term, but it means the place (even in cyberspace) where persons can project ideas to large numbers of others.

Just who, exactly, are Dorsey, Zuckerberg, etc. to determine ideas "false" and censor them?

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/10/republican-bill-seeks-to-limit-section-230-protection-for-tech-platforms.html

Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc. are the real "public square" these days.  These companies profit off the "public square" and enjoy exemptions from liability laws because of that.

Other than liability concerns, why should Facebook, Twitter, etc. censor users who are using their platforms lawfully?

If Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc. feel the need to censor as they are doing, they simply don't need the protections they receive under Section 230.  Let them be treated like publishers.
