I have a possible theory. The optimum belief for capitalism is that people be mirror-image Marxists, the sorts of people who endorse the very things (inequity, harsh management, gross insecurity of life for anyone not already rich, limited opportunities for people not already in the economic elite, government beholden to the rich-and-powerful at the expense of everyone and everything else, and pervasive corruption) that Marxists see as cause for a proletarian revolution. The fault with people holding so abnormal a set of ideas is that those who hold them must be rewarded with easy money if they are to not become Marxist-Leninists. Bland liberalism is far safer, as it seeks to make the world better for people who are not already super-rich.

People are less likely to be fifth-columns for Marxist invaders or leftist insurgencies if they have something to lose, like good housing, nice consumer goodies, high-quality recreation, economic security... and the fascistic Right that typically endorses capitalism at its worst denies those. Not surprisingly it resorts to terror and repression.

What usually happened was that a professor who was no longer up to the job or could teach something in which he was expert but had no educational market (let us say the design of mainframe computers) was put out to pasture while getting a paycheck.

College students have informal guides that warn about cranks and other unfit professors ("He pushes pseudoscience", "she falls asleep in lectures")

Being a college professor used to be a great job... but there are plenty of "lecturers", "visiting professors" and "adjunct professors" who are simply paid badly. They make about as much as substitute school teachers in K-12 education.

lol, no. That depends on the institution and field. A lecturer in finance or law at a reputable school will not be paid substitute teacher salaries. An adjunct in English at a community college, maybe. And literally nobody goes into academia for the money. The higher-paid fields have to pay their faculty more because they could earn way more in the private sector. Also, tenure has never had anything to do with professors not being "up to the job".
