There's been a lot of talk about how Democrats can win back Cubans in Miami. But if we look at this from the other side - that Florida is no longer a "kingmaker" in presidential elections, might this present Biden an opportunity to deal with Cuba without having to worry about potential electoral repercussions? I ask because Florida's political leverage is often cited as a key reason for the lack of progress with Cuban relations. Democrats may not want to just not contest Florida in 2024, but the opportunity seems there if they want to take it.

Maybe, but I doubt there would be much of a difference had Biden won with the same states and FL on top. It would not have been the tipping point in this scenario. Biden would just have won with more EVs overall (335 EVs).

What happens when Raul Castro kicks the bucket?

What happens should Cuba get a Gorbachev-like leader?  Maybe Cuban-Americans could end up split on how to respond to a Cuba that starts to democratize but refuses to return nationalized property to the families of former economic elites now living in Florida and want to lord it over the Cuban people again. Any overtures toward free enterprise will create opportunities for Cuban-Americans who (if they aren't @$$holes seeking to live aristocratic lives like their ancestors before 1959) will better know how to relate to Cubans in Cuba.

I know no Cuban-Americans and I have never even been in Florida... but I would expect that Cuban-Americans would be better positioned to promote economic change in Cuba than, well, Scandinavian-Americans... or even Mexican-Americans.

One thing is sure -- let's keep American mobsters (whether Sicilian or Russian) out of Cuba.

Obama wanted to lift the embargo on Cuba, which isn't necessary any longer since we are in a cold War with Korea not Cuba and no nukes are aimed at US from Cuba

Obama opened up relations with Cuba in 2014 and in 2016 Clinton got the highest share of Florida Latino vote, I'm not sure what to make of this but it isn't Cuba specific that will determine how Cuban Americans will vote

If D's get a majority of both Houses of Congress, they can lift the Cuban embargo, Obama wanted to do so

It’s never enough for some people. He’d need to support bombing Caracas into the ground.

He should talk about fighting Maduro down to the ground while secretly cozying up to their allies. After all that’s what these Venezuelans seem to want.
