With the naming of Subtropical Storm Theta, we have broken the record for most named tropical cyclones in an Atlantic Hurricane Season.

And we aren't done yet.

Very high chance Iota will form soon in the Caribbean, aiming at a similar path as Eta.

Tropical Storm Iota has formed, and is the thirtieth named storm of this record breaking season.

It is projected to make landfall on the Honduras/Nicaragua border as a major hurricane.

I just went back to the first page, when the title "stormy and intense" was given, and the initial forecast was for only about half the number of storms that we have had...though I doubt anyone could have predicted THIRTY named storms.

It'll be interesting if Eta is retired from the list of backup names.

I'm pretty sure the procedure is not to retire a Greek name.

That said, Eta would make a great case for retirement.

What would they replace it with? A Roman name? An Egyptian name?

I'd assume they'd just remove it without replacement.

Perhaps they need to make preparations for regularly having more than 21 named storms by having a second list of names.

Hurricane Iota made landfall last night as a Category 4 storm with 155 MPH winds near Haulover, Nicaragua.

Quote
Hurricane Iota is spreading a dangerous threat of flooding rainfall and damaging winds into Central America after making landfall in northern Nicaragua as a strong Category 4 late Monday night.

Iota made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph at 10:40 p.m. EST on Monday near the town of Haulover, Nicaragua, or about 30 miles south of Puerto Cabezas, the National Hurricane Center said. The landfall location of Iota was just 15 miles south of where Hurricane Eta made landfall as a Category 4 earlier this month on Nov. 3.

This is the first time on record two major hurricanes - Category 3 or stronger - made landfall in Nicaragua in the same hurricane season, much less only two weeks apart. NOAA's hurricane database only documented seven such Category 3-plus landfalls in Nicaragua prior from the mid-19th century through 2019.

Not in the Atlantic, but Cyclone Gati just became the strongest tropical system ever to make landfall in Somalia. Winds were 105 MPH

Quote
Eight deaths are being blamed on Tropical Cyclone Gati, the first hurricane-strength system to hit Somalia in recorded history.

Gati made landfall about 6 p.m. Sunday local time over the city of Hafun with sustained winds of 105 mph, the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane.
