Last time this happened was 2004, but the Republicans ran up the score in big red states like Texas, Florida, Georgia and the rest of the south while keeping it relatively close  in the blue states. How can results like these happen again?

Find a candidate who can turnout as many voters as Trump did in 2020 without generating the kind of hate that Trump did.

They don't, instead they keep relying on the distortionary effects of the electoral college to hand them minority wins because it's their path of least resistance. This will, over time, eat into the advantages they've created for themselves throughout the political system as they suffer blowback after blowback for trying to implement political projects that fail to gain majority support.

Success begets laziness.

Stop being terrible and alienating the majority of the country.

It's really that simple.

In order of likelihood:

1. If the Hispanic vote keeps trending right, eventually lose California by just 15 or so and win Texas and Florida by at least 5.  It would be similar to the Bush 2004 path, just with different swing states.

2.  Win the entire Rust Belt outside of Chicago by Indiana margins and come within 10-15% in Illinois and New York.

#1 could happen as soon as 2024, but it might not be viable in the long run.  #2 is a viable long run strategy but unlikely to happen in the next couple cycles.

Maybe if they ran a really safe establishment type that doesn't have too much controversy. Someone like Hogan, Phil Scott, Baker, Kasich, DeWine.

Coupled with the democrats running someone that is just really unliked.

Get Romney's 2012 margin with whites plus do a bit better than Trump did with Hispanics.

They won't, Cali, IL, NY have the 4 main Cities in the nation LA-SF, Chicago, NY metro and DC that locks in the PVI for Ds

That's why WI, PA and MI are the remaining states to end the EC college and R state legislatures won't ratify the PVI Amendment
