As we see political tensions increase to virtually unprecedented heights in recent times throughout several countries widely considered to be democratic, advanced and developed (the U.S. or Spain, for example), I wonder whether it is possible for a society in a country that fits that description to collapse into some form of old fashioned armed civil war or revolution. What is your opinion?

No, they usually happen successfully in regional and secondary industrious, manufacturing powers. In the 1700s; revolutionary awakening happened in semi-industrious societies like New England from the core of England and the secondary continental power of France and the northwestern Germanic people fell to revolution for better competition from England and the HRE. Same thing in the 1900s; the embarrassed Russians and Germans went to revolution after losing pretty badly in war in the 1920s, after a century of humiliation China went to blows, then sugarcane producing Cuba and the lot of them.

Now, Ethiopia—in order to not implode or get left behind in the region—is going through conflict against the former leadership. Latin America is going through current strife to be finally free from the American Yoke. Thailand is in inner conflict from being straddled by great powers. Armenia currently is going through polarization after being badly beaten in war.

These aren’t happening in such veracity and intensity in the imperial core of the Central European or Anglophone or Japanese blocs. What happens in these countries is conflicts between immigrants and nativists or weak inklings of class conflict, but they have things in place to be able to deal and insulate themselves from such hardships via imperialism. Secondary countries don’t have that same reach nor the money to get through things like these, and their propaganda outfits pretty weak.

The world is changing rapidly and the information era made civil wars unlikely, as influence of the army and religions decay. Young people nowadays are either more obsessed by losing their boyfriend or bff, losing in a multiplayer game like fortnite or fifa or their phone getting broke, outdated or not being able to charge it again. They care more about what happen to Justin Bieber or Wiz Khalifa than over geopolitical movements.

Dude, we are now way more political and caring of the world then back in the 1900s when s••• hit the fan. Most of our info may be not political, but the ease of getting political info is just so easy now.

Even in a culture like Indonesia which is very into meme culture, we see the fires rising.

Yet, people are too lazy to protest.

Well it takes the right conditions for it, and as we’ve seen recently, it takes a lot to get them out on the street. However, when they do, it is potent and lasts a while now.

It's highly improbable, but not impossible.

at best we could have a very hot insurgency.  Pitched battles won't happen because you have to have two sides to do that.

I suppose "the people" could convince the military to take over governmental duties if "the people" think that they've been robbed of elections.  But that would be a very hard sell.

The only thing certain about revolution in the modern world is that it will not be televised.
