John Delaney announced his campaign in 2017, a full three years before the election. Who do you think will be the first to do so this time and how long out before the election do you think it will be?

He could announce tomorrow and claim he's just running for a third-term because of the impeachment etc. and how "MASSIVE FRAUD" stole the election and so forth.

Trump, within a year of the current date. Nobody else will join the primary for a long time after that. You’ll get a couple other challengers: a never-Trumper (Hogan or Kasich), perhaps someone from the “Libertarian wing” (Sasse or Massie), and maybe you get a more mainline Trumpish Republican who says the party needs someone new and younger (Haley?).

I don’t see there being much of a primary. It will be like an incumbent renomination more than an actual primary process.

If not Trump, then one of those obscure candidates like Ken Nwadike.

Trump, obviously. He'll announce in the next several months, but be locked up by the time the primary starts.

An early-announced Gabbard primary challenge wouldn't surprise me.

Maybe he goes to the inauguration after all, but pulls a Kanye and takes the microphone away from Biden in order to announce his next presidential campaign.

Still want to know who the Republican version of John Delaney would be.

It won't be Trump, he'd do a replay of 2015 and not announce until early 2023.

That seems about right.

The minute that Trump announces, is when the countdown begins for his incarceration! There's no way in hell, that the powers to be, allow Trump the opportunity of regaining the White House again! The idea is, if you're not a threat to us Trump, then we'll leave you alone! If you have a chance of being competitive, we are taking you down brother!

Running for president opens Trump up to a lot of financial issues that he probably doesn't want and can't afford to face without the power of the office of the presidency. If he runs, he'll wait until 2023.

Hot take: GOP candidates declare later than usual this cycle, as they wait to see whether Trump runs.

Preparing to run for President is a fairly public process, full of superpacs, dinners, polling etc. If Trump is undecided, I could see some candidates remaining low-key, while they wait for him to make up his mind. If they're all this scared of him, the last thing they'd want is to seem to be trying to steal his thunder/directly opposing him.

If Trump is doing a public 'will-I/won't-I" dance in '22/'23, I can see candidates like Ted Cruz waiting until the mid/back part of 2023 to declare, rather than the start of that year.
