Right, but the point is that Oz/GOP has been trying to "John Fetterman is a Bernie Sanders radical socialist" and it is not, and has not been, working this entire time.

It seems like while the attack CAN be effective, it generally needs to be done against Dems that aren't very well defined. Fetterman is already a pretty defined figure in PA and has his own character and stuff so attacks like this tend to be less effective. A better strategy could be to attack his current character somehow.

I think a lot of what is blunting these attacks too is that Fetterman has a record in the sense that he's been the Lt Gov for the last 4 years. He doesn't have any house votes so you can only attack him on his legislative career, and for the majority of the time that he's been a known figure statewide, he's been a part of a "progressively moderate" administration in Wolf's administration.

That's also why a lot of people who are more "moderate" joined in and don't really believe the "Bernie Sanders 2.0" attacks, because he has been the Lt Gov of the state for 4 years and they haven't seen any record of Wolf or him being "radical socialists" during their time together.

Attacking an opponent as socialist works better in Dem primaries than in general elections.

Even then, it didn't work when Lamb or Big Pharma did it.

I don't see this whole continuing "i'm going to attack you for having a stroke and properly recovering from it!" thing working out well for Oz

Oz is still going to win. In previous midterms, generic ballot polls have gotten better for the "out" party as Election Day gets closer. I hope I'm wrong, but I think Oz is saved by 4-5 points.

How is this owned? All fettermen does is bring up the New Jersey thing over and over and over again. Both of them are cringe worthy to be honest.

A) you're clearly not from PA and B) this is not going to be 'both sides'-ed. Fetterman's social clap backs are nowhere near on the same level as Oz's.

No, I’m not from PA, but that is literally is response every single time. Just referencing NJ.

Well, yes, because online especially, this is the most potent attack against Oz, and even in real life, one of the attacks that lands the best. Fetterman would be dumb not to attack Oz with something so potent.

If you pay attention to political campaigns, you're supposed to be bored to death by the repetition of their talking points, because that means normal people will absorb it a few times.

Why is it the most potent attack online specifically? I’m not saying that has no impact but I fail to see how that can be so potent over the actual issues and platforms of the two candidates.

There are plenty of attacks on the issues. Am I supposed to just post a tweet on inflation policy when I can post this:

People from outside PA don't seem to understand the whole PA-NJ thing. You just wouldn't get it unless you lived here. This attack would not work if Oz was from any of the 48 other states (or 95% not nearly enough). It's just different.

It's interesting to me that Republican campaigns are always the ones that push the dumb buzz words and make campaigns all about that, and yet when a Democrat flips the script on that playbook and uses it against them, in this case Fetterman constantly pushing the NJ storyline, then of course Rs get so critical of Fetterman.

Not to mention, for the 10th time, Fetterman is not just using *just this* as an issue. His TV ads don't really focus much on it at all and he posts and tweets about many other issues too. But this is clearly an issue that connects and relates to people in PA, so he'd be an idiot not to keep pushing it.

Hell, I was BORN in Trenton and lived there until I was 6, and I have that knee-jerk dislike of New Jersey.  Many Pennsylvanians who have even deeper roots here despise the Garden State.

Through my work on some state legislative races, I’ve heard from plenty of Independents that they’re loving the Jersey Oz/Tourist Oz/Wizard of Oz remarks.  They find it both funny and accurate, and appreciate that Fetterman’s media comes off more like a dude you would have a beer with and not some stiff neck politician.

Again - there's a massive difference between coming over from Cherry Hill or even Trenton and living in a NJ mansion with a view of the NYC skyline.

I'm going to point out that this is a mentality that surely doesn't go any further west than Harrisburg if that. Having grown up in Pittsburgh we never gave a second thought about Jersey except a place we might get away to With Buddies for the summer to go party and meet girls. Adults didn't care about Jersey one way or the other either.

Collective hatred of something is a very effective tool.
