For the idoits who think that Jennifer McClellan or Jennifer Carol Foy could have VA Gov 2021.. you are wrong. Barring unforeseen events in that hypothetical.

Jennifer McClellan was one of the handful of state senators to vote against a bill requiring in person instruction and Jennifer Carol Foy was very cozy with teachers. That and their inability to financially compete would have probably caused them to lose by high single digits.

Also, Wednesday January 12 is when the new session of the General Assembly convenes with a Republican majority in the House of Delegates vs. a still Democratic-controlled state Senate.

I haven't been on this thread in a while but are the doomers still talking about how Youngkin will bring back the death penalty despite a Democratic Senate and no interest in doing so?

It appears that the outgoing First Lady Pamela Northam is the reason her husband ultimately decided not to resign in the wake of the yearbook black-face scandal, and we have her to thank for all the progress that has been made to address racial justice in the state:

Virginia first lady Pamela Northam helped expand pre-K — and keep her husband from resigning

Quote
Northam used what could have been a purely ceremonial post as an opportunity to lead the charge to expand and improve early-childhood education, relentlessly lobbying legislators, chairing the governor’s Children’s Cabinet, and logging some 11,000 miles to make her case across the state.

She also stepped up — quietly, but critically — at a moment of crisis in early 2019, when the governor was nearly driven from office by a blackface scandal. In the anguished hours and days that followed, she was one of the most steadfast advocates for the governor’s sticking it out and turning the episode into an opportunity to double down on the cause of racial equity.

Quote
With his wife’s support, the governor not only completed his term but mustered an unlikely comeback, working with a General Assembly that turned fully blue halfway through his term to deliver a host of long-sought Democratic goals: tightening gun laws, easing restrictions on voting, eliminating the death penalty and legalizing marijuana. The pre-K initiatives the first lady championed were part of that same equity push.

Over the course of Gov. Northam’s term, the state doubled funding for public pre-K programs, allowing the number of slots for children ages 3 and 4 to rise from about 18,000 to a record 25,000. Enrollment in Virginia’s child-care subsidy program, for use in private, church- and home-based centers, grew from about 21,000 to a record 30,000.

Pamela Northam “was a tremendous advocate for early-childhood education, and not just at the 30-foot view but actually in the weeds of the issue,” said Del. Glenn Davis (Virginia Beach), one of many Republicans won over by the first lady’s advocacy. “We wouldn’t be where we are today if it weren’t for her dedication and leadership on these issues.”

It is interesting how Virginia is more willing to elect Republican governors than North Carolina despite  being a more Dem friendly state.

It's ironic that Youngkin got so mad at the Trumpkin thing given that his new EO's are literally Trumpkin in nature.

Weird question: Is there some kind of tradition Virginia governors wear this wider tie in silver at inauguration? I noticed both Northam and Youngkin did so.

I'm already curious to see his first approval poll but so far it's about what I was expecting. Democrats greatly opposing him and Republicans giving him their full support.

I'm from Ohio so I can't say I have a true valid opinion of him one way or the other.

Blue state red governors are almost always either enormously popular or enormously unpopular. I have a feeling Youngkin is going to be the latter of the two by the end of his term.

It is interesting how Virginia is more willing to elect Republican governors than North Carolina despite  being a more Dem friendly state.

The moderate-conservative downballot Dems outside of the cities never truly collapsed in NC until like right now.  Cooper comes from that group that had been serving in the downballot Council of State offices for 10+ years.

VA also has way fewer elected offices than NC, which makes the 3 VA statewide offices higher profile and more nationalized.

Why do you say so? It's certainly clear that Youngkin is governing, or will be governing, to the right of Baker, Hogan, and Scott.

Exactly, so he won't enjoy the support of Indies and Dems like the ones you mentioned

VAGOP moving swiftly to throw the state back into the 20th century:

Quote
HB 79 Marijuana and certain traffic offenses; issuing citations.
Introduced by: Ronnie R. Campbell

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:
Issuing citations; marijuana and certain traffic offenses. Removes the provisions that provide that no law-enforcement officer may lawfully stop a motor vehicle for operating (i) without a light illuminating a license plate, (ii) with defective and unsafe equipment, (iii) without brake lights or a high mount stop light, (iv) without an exhaust system that prevents excessive or unusual levels of noise, (v) with certain sun-shading materials and tinting films, and (vi) with certain objects suspended in the vehicle, and the accompanying the exclusionary provisions.

The bill also repeals the provision that provides that no law-enforcement officer may lawfully stop, search, or seize any person, place, or thing solely on the basis of the odor of marijuana and that no evidence discovered or obtained as a result of such unlawful search or seizure shall be admissible in any trial, hearing, or other proceeding.

Quote
HB 72 Marijuana cultivation facility licenses; prohibition on sale of plants and seeds.
Introduced by: R. Lee Ware

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:
Marijuana cultivation facility licenses; prohibition on sale of plants and seeds. Provides that, if an act of assembly is passed by the 2022 Session of the General Assembly that creates a license that authorizes the licensee to cultivate retail marijuana and perform related activities, such licensees shall not be permitted to sell mature or immature marijuana plants or marijuana seeds to consumers.

Yes, and Youngkin never ran as a "Baker" or "Scott," nor is VA as Democratic as MA or VT, nor is the R base in VA (which turned out in unprecedented numbers/margins for him) as liberal as in those New England states, nor did Youngkin receive significant crossover support from Democrats in the GE the way those aforementioned Republicans did. Youngkin also promised to reverse some of the radical D policies of the last eight years, so I don’t see what the big deal here is.
