What was it specifically about that first debate that hurt trump so badly? Betting odds turned against him sharply after that as did many polls

Was it, electorally?

The odds turned against him a bit because the narrative was that this was the most likely point at which Biden would collapse.

Because it reminded America what kind of a$$hole trump really is.
The moron acted like he did, in front of millions of people.
Why he, and his advisors, thought his antics would be a good idea, is beyond me.

The same reason the betting market would collapse for a football team when they punt the ball while down 14 points with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. He had just missed on one of his few chances to make up any kind of significant ground on Biden. After that there just weren’t many other chances left.

I don't think the first debate was an unmitigated disaster for Trump, even if it was absolutely miserable to watch on the whole, but it was Trump's last chance to really change the narrative of the campaign and he failed to do that.

Because he didn't debate anything. He spent the whole time interrupting and looking like a kid fighting over who gets the last snack in the pantry as opposed to looking like a POTUS. Only brainwashed Trump lovers can watch that debacle and say "AWWWWW YEAH! PUTTIN THAT MODERATOR IN HIS PLACE! YOU GET THAT FAKE NEWS DONALD!!"

It should have been much more damaging.
Shocking that after
- this ridiculous debate at the end of september
- the early september report about disparaging US War Dead as ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’
(and all the rest)
he still managed to get 47.4% of the popular vote....

Yes, after Trump flubbed the debate, he caught Covid and got over it and went around saying since he got over it, it was our imagination that Covid was on the rise. Guess what Mr EX Prez, Winter is here and we are in flu season in Nov, Jan and Feb

One does not simply make fun of Joe Biden for wearing a mask and then contract COVID three days later and hope to win re-election.

It's an old meme sir, but it checks out.
