He was.  Ridge acctually refused.

The way things turned out, Gore should have chosen someone from Florida, obviously. I don't think Cheney helped the Republican ticket much, but he was on the ticket for other reasons.

It seems like, for whatever reason, Democratic candidates do better with their VP picks than Republicans, at least in recent years. I'm not sure why.

From what I heard, it was basically down to Senator John Danforth, and Secretary Cheney.

He was.  Ridge acctually refused.

There was another factor.  Ridge is a moderate on abortion issues; he is also Catholic, and was banned from speaking at Church functions because of this.  There was a lot of pressure on Bush not to name him.  Ridge took his name out largely after the the Bush campaign said there would be problems.
