"the American Dream: to get so rich you can rise above the rabble, all those people on the freeway or, worse, the bus. No, the dream is a big house, off alone somewhere. A penthouse, like Howard Hughes. Or a mountaintop castle, like William Randolph Hearst. Some lovely isolated nest were you can invite only the rabble you like. An environment you can control, free from conflict and pain. Where you rule."

There are basically two 'american dreams' - 1) to get rich and have lots of fawning servile slaves, and 2) to own a home, have tolerable working conditions, and have a secure retirement.  The former is the real american dream - but it is reserved for the elite.  The latter is something the Democratic Party and the unions provided for workers from the 1930s through the 1970s.

Interesting look at it. I would say No, but it seems alright to me.

I would propose that the American dream is passing on something better to your children than what you got from your parents. Or something along those "bettering your life" lines.

No, but it does sound pretty nice. The American Dream is a simple concept centered around one not so simple goal; to die happy.

Its good. It provides a convenient way to distract the poor masses, justl ike how the ideas of karma and reincarnation make controlling lower caste people easier.
