Question so I get the German Wiki entries right:

Is Warnock the first African-American ever to win a statewide race in GA ? Or only statewide for a federal race (excl. Governor, statewide dog-catcher etc.) ?

And I guess he's the first Black Senator from GA ever, right ?

He's the first black Senator elected by the people (rather than a legislature) from a southern state. The others were MS Republicans.

While I still don't necessarily love the idea of trifectas, I'm more than okay with McConnell getting his sorry self unseated as SML.

Well done, GA Purple heart

He's the first black senator but Georgia has voted state-wide for African Americans before.

First black federal candidate to win statewide in GA; first black Democratic Senator elected in the South.

(Both Thurbert Baker and Michael Thurmond won statewide elections as black men in the past for Attorney General and Labor Commissioner, respectively)

Thanks.

Were these 2 Democrats or Republicans ?

Not predicting a winner but gun to my head: the Atlanta suburbs will be a bit more Republican than they were for Trump in November.

This aged so horribly.

DeKalb dropped its last remaining votes and those heroes can go home.

Ossoff 3,635
Perdue 71
That's 98% of that vote drop, bringing Ossoff's lead to .4%/16,370.

Interesting.

So, there were 2 Republican Black Senators in MS about 150 years ago.

But their political positions back then are similar to today's Democrats.

lol Ossoff did better than Biden in most of Metro Atlanta. Soon Republicans will be begging for Trump 11/3 numbers again.

I think it’s fair to say that the people of West Virginia were the real winners tonight.

Yes. The Dixiecrats had a long shadow and sought to keep white Dems in control, even when Jim Crow was buried in the 60s. The only African Americans Senators ever representing the South were Republicans, Tim Scott currently as well as Hiram Rhodes Revels and Blanche Bruce during reconstruction.

And it wasn't until 2004 where a Senate election featured two black candidates.  One was an obscure and little-known gentleman named Barack Obama.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely in favor of bringing back radical Reconstruction.

Actually things seem a little more mixed than you might think.  Northern ones more R, Southern ones more D

Mississippi was majority black back then, couldn't happen today even in a completely fair election unless white Mississippians became substantially more democratic.

All 4 of the other Senate Democrats elected (not just appointed) have run for President this century.

Both in a Georgia sense & beyond how common is it for the run-off to be won by someone who finished second?

In Georgia and the US, I don't know, but in France where most of our elections have runoffs, it's pretty common.

Can't speak for Georgia, but it's not as uncommon as it may seem (particularly when the first round is scattered across many candidates).

Round I

Candidate A (Dem) 15%
Candidate B (Rep.) 10%
Others (Dem) 34%
Others (Rep) 41%

Run-off

Candidate B (Rep) 54%
Candidate A (Dem) 46%
