Can someone please explain to me why people keep mentioning Manchin?

As the most moderate Democrat in a Senate controlled by Dems by just 1 vote, he'll have huge influence over what bills can be passed.

Lol he can do anything he wants now. Isn't he retiring?

He flipped two previously deep red states (AZ and GA) blue and both will have two Democratic senators, giving us a trifecta.

If there was any doubt Trump was a failed president for his party before, it's gone now. Don't be surprised if they start to lose faith and look elsewhere.

Biden was supposed to win in a 2008 style landslide. A 4.5 point win was a semi disappointment for Biden. The CNN exit polls had Trump at 50% approval in 2020, which is terrifying.

2020 should've shown you that neither CNN nor exit polling should be taken as reliable sources.

He's the most likely member of the Democratic caucus to object to a piece of progressive legislation in a 50-50 Senate. Biden and Schumer will probably have to cut a lot of deals with him to make sure he doesn't give the Republicans a 51st "no" vote on something like repealing Trump's tax cuts for the rich.

Who the heck was the Jewish Deep South Senator in the 1880s?

The first Jewish communities in America were in the south. Yulee, and Judah are famous southern senators who were Jewish pre-war

Ossoff will be the first millennial in the U.S. Senate.

I think he will be the youngest Senator since Biden was 1st elected to the Senate (although I could be incorrect... I know he will be the youngest in the last 40 years).

I think that concern is overrated.  Democrats want to pass a lot of stuff that would have majority support but Mitch doesn't bring it to the floor.  If they bring stuff now, even if Manchin doesn't go for it, you're likely going to have Susan Collins or others vote yes.

Trump has really done a number on the confidence of our nations decision desks.

Not just decision desks, political observers of all degrees.

The "Senate Republicans will prevent Ossoff/Warnock from being seated" take has already emerged here in the last 30 minutes. Folks won't believe election results even when they've been certified

These are just a few examples of the permanent damage Trump has inflicted on our society and its institutions.

Well, regardless, David Levy Yulee was a Senator in the 1850s not the 1880s. So the Beschloss tweet is correct.

I’d like to point out that Ossoff is Jewish. So a state with a notorious history of lynching Jews and blacks has just elected them to the senate for the first time at the same time

To be fair, I think there was only one high-profile Jewish victim of lynching, Leo Frank, and you can't really compare that to what African-Americans experienced over time.

Now we’re going to have a Jewish majority leader as well. And Secretary of State, secretary of the treasury, secretary of homeland security, chief of staff, and second gentleman.

Yes, but Manchin is a true believer in centrism.

I really don’t get why you were so confident about these races/this state. Don’t get me wrong, I predicted narrow wins for Loeffler and Perdue as well, but a very outspoken liberal black woman literally received 49% of the vote in Georgia just two years ago. I feel like many Republicans were almost as cocky about GA as Democrats were about WI/PA/MI in 2016.

Obviously the state is now at least Lean D, and close to Likely D in terms of probability rather than margin.

Just noticed that Fulton actually snuck in most, if not all of their remaining mail in the last vote dump.

Georgia is blue for the foreseeable future unless Dem's nominate a toxic candidate.  If Ossoff can beat Perdue there is really no excuse for Dems not to win in the state from now on.

I wish that were true, but these and Biden's wins we're razor close in a democratic year. We've reached purple status, but not Atlas red Georgia. It's got at least another several years to a decade of continuous demographic change before it becomes another Colorado or Virginia.
