THE CERTIFYING DUTCHMAN!

Seriously, though, it's still unsettling that it came to this. God only knows what AVL would have done if Nessel hadn't threatened to #LockHimUp. (Literally God only knows; there's an entire theological question about to what extent He "knows" counterfactuals.)

PQG, surely Van Buren won Ontario County in 1836, not 1832 (when Van Buren was Andrew Jackson's running mate rather than the head of the ticket)?

(Flipping through "Texas Version of US History" textbook)

...the South won the Civil War though, right?

Tbf, based on the Politico article about him, it doesn't seem like Nessel was at all a factor in his determination. He simply followed the letter of the law - which provided the board with a clear legal duty to certify the results of the election as shown by the returns that were given to them - because it was the right (not to mention, legally required) thing to do, which is a shocker for a modern-day Republican, I know.

ProgressiveModerate: could you make Georgia (and presumably Arizona when it certifies) just a little bit darker?  That extremely light blue is almost indistinguishable from a non-certified state.

I could, but because the color is based off a function, states like ME, MN, and TX would also become darker. Your choice

Third time Ontario County votes D, LBJ in 1964 and Clinton in 1996.

Had a feeling this would flip given that Trump failed to get a majority there in 2016.
Why was this so consistently R over the decades?

Just  rural enough, probably.

I don't think that really suffices for an explanation, since Ds have performed decently well in some major sections in rural Upstate New York.
Perhaps it's the fact it's less rural than some other ones. Parts of Ontario are exurban, and those were among the most reliably R areas in Upstate over the decades? Maybe it's the fact it's in Western NY?

Wasserman got the absentees from Tompkins (Ithaca)

Biden: 9,714 (86%)
Trump: 1,310 (12%)

That would put the county at 74-25 Biden. It was 68-24 Clinton.

Just a little fun with math.

I think it would be improved if it all darkened.

From a local Atlanta reporter:

I'm just noticing this now, and this is truly an astonishing story. An elderly white woman in Georgia, who has been voting in every presidential election for almost 80 years, and is a lifelong Democrat. It's ironic that the first President she voted for-Roosevelt-was the President under which this year's victor (that she also voted for), Biden, was born. I also saw a story on CBS News a few days before the election about an elderly woman, living in Texas or Arizona I believe, who traveled several hours so that she could vote this year. That woman too, is a lifelong Democrat, having first voted for Harry Truman in 1948. These individuals are living relics of a seemingly distant past who will soon be gone from us.

There are some rad old white people in Georgia, oddly enough. I met the old chief justice of the GA Supreme Court (I think Norman Fletcher but don't quote me on that) and he was super based. He was from like rural South-ish Georgia, but he absolutely despised the Trump administration and said his greatest regret was not opposing the death penalty early and vigorously enough. Such a king.

Well, 36 more days and then 2020 will be over. There's nothing Trump can do about it.

Very highly likely. He is already at 57% according to the AP count, and they havent factored in almost 100k net gains for Biden that we know are coming according to wasserman from erie county ny, ontario co ny, tompkins co ny, dutchess co ny, etc.

I have personal connections in four of those five counties (all but Ontario). The Upstate New York swings seem almost tailored as fanservice for me and my close friend group personally. You love to see it, folks.

Maybe this post of yours was premature:

I know, I saw your above post. I'm still grieving places like Northern New York being gone for the Democrats and most of far northern Honshu being gone for the Japanese center-left, so I'll probably be salty about Umbria for a while as well.

Hopefully it's premature for Umbria too Sad Smiley
