Here is my obvious question from WWII.

Why did England and Germany fight in the deserts all the way away in Northern Egypt and Libya 2,600 miles to the Southeast when they were only separated by a 22 mile stretch of water on the Western Front?

That is the equivalent of Alaska going to war with Canada and both groups send troops to Japan to fight each other.

It lacks common sense.

The Royal Navy was focused on the defense of Britain, while Italy had a fairly large and competent navy in the Mediterranean and existing colonies in Africa that gave a good starting point for the Axis forces. Indeed, the North African campaign started out as a Italo-British fight that the Germans only became involved in  later when their ally needed help.

The points made by Ernest above are entirely true. Germany wanted to push Britain out of North Africa for the simple fact that if the Suez was captured then the British would lose a huge resource in transporting resources between their Asiatic holdings and their holdings in Europe.
