Government of Ireland listening to scientists. Imposes six weeks lockdown. Retail stores fear they will not survive.

There are extreme scientists out there and listening to them is not the smartest thing to do.

What the hell are "extreme" scientists? The opposite of "moderate" scientists who only adhere to scientific facts partially and/or occasionally? You whole line reasoning comes acoss as a tad more than anti-intellectual.

Extreme scientists are those who consider only one field - their field, without taking into consideration the effects of their proposed measures on other fields and the society as a whole.

Extremely stupid politicians are those who listen to these extreme scientists.

So, "extreme scientists" is a synonym for non-omnidisciplinary scientists? Only scientists who are both qualified virologists and economists at the same time would constitute "non-extreme" scientists in your opinion? Do you consider to that view to be particularly realistic?

It's certainly true that virologists are not economists and therefore don't provide any advice on economic matters. This is apparently where we disagree, because I don't think that it would be a particularly good idea if virologists would start to give economic advice to politicians. Because these would be unqualified opinions. The job of virologists is to give advice on their field of expertise, just like it is the job of economists to give advice on their field of expertise. It is then the job of elected politicians to make a final decision based on that these various inputs.

And that's what politicians have in fact done these past months, at least in my country. As I had indicated in my first, somewhat lengthy post in this thread some health experts in Germany had argued in April that we need to keep up the lockdowns for a couple of more weeks longer to wipe out the virus completely. But one aspect that led politicians to lift the lockdown earlier was in fact worry about the state of the economy. Just like we are in situation right now at this very moment where politicians in Germany are hesitating to return to measures as harsh as the ones back March/April for similar reasons.

This brings us back to question of what do you want? That virologists shut up about virology? That virologists start advising politicians on fields they are unqualified and inexperienced in?

It likely could have helped Trump if election were in 2-3 months until election, not in 2 weeks (and early voting started weeks ago).

# of cases/deaths is doubling each 2 weeks in Europe, and it might get ugly, because some countries probably doesn't have economics good enough to impose a severe lock-downs if necessary, because... they invested too much in the first lock-downs (that is what Biden/Dems wanted?).

Spain imposes a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. As if coronavirus only spreads during the night. Crazy stuff. You can't make this stuff up.

It's obviously to reduce nonessential public activities.

Crazy Europeans impose full lockdowns again.

France will go into a national lockdown starting Friday.

Germany orders closure of restaurants, bars, cinemas, and similar establishments.

They are never going to recover from this.

As for the United States, the Stock Market is in free fall and only Trump's victory can stop that collapse.
If Biden wins, the investors will realize a new lockdown is imminent and the only thing that can possibly stop the slide at that moment will be a new stimulus.

As someone actually living there yeah, the curfew is actually quite dumb, even if we do need strict meaaures

Nightclubs and clandestine parties have been the origin of coronavirus outbreaks, so the curfew is not so crazy and Spain is not the only implementing country. Another question is that the curfew alone is not going to plain the curve, given that the coronavirus spreads with daylight too. Many Spanish regions are implementing or about to implement restrictions to mobility, limits on opening hours, seating capacities, gatherings, etcetera

More than 200 thousand dead and millions of infected are a stuff crazy enough to pretend a country can have a normal life without restrictions that everybody hates, but epidemiologists deem necessary to contain the virus spread

I don't think Europe is going to influence the US election, for better pr for worse

The United Kingdom will go into a new national lockdown.

The United States is lucky to have Trump.
