BRTD just called a convert away from Catholicism and anti-Catholic bigot a "big time massive FF"?
Shocked I tell you.

Aside from that, I don't want to talk about the usual things. So I'll just say FF for the fact that he followed Garibaldi's expedition and produced cartoons and articles about it which proved very popular.

He wasn't an "anti-Catholic bigot" anymore than he was an "anti-Tammany Hall bigot". Association with either institution is completely voluntary.

The first sentence of your post has nothing to do with the second, and the latter seems to imply that you believe it impossible to be prejudiced or bigoted against members of voluntary associations, which flies in the face of this nation's stance on freedom of conscience.

Definite freedom fighter. I most like his caricatures of William Tweed and Andrew Johnson.

Apparently there was a Thomas Nast Award given by the Overseas Press Club, but Nast got canceled in 2018.

HP (hilarious person) with some very problematic views of Catholic immigrants. On the other hand, way ahead of his time in regards to his views on just about every other minority.

FF on balance. His anti-Catholicism and that of other early Republican partisans was not okay but it's understandable given the political cleavages of the era and the fact that the pope at the time was an evil son of a bitch who all but overtly favored the Slave Power.

If only VE2 (or NB3 I should say) had allowed Garibaldi to go into Rome and utmostly crush him in 1860 already...
