North Korea is probably a bigger threat to it's neighbors than us, and considering how completely dependent they are on the foreign community for food I don't think they'll be that big of one if they've got any brains. I don't think Iran has any plans to nuke us, though I think overall they are more of a threat to us, but moreso to Israel.

On one hand, North Korea could be a bigger threat to the US, because if anyone, Iran is going to want to blow up Israel.

On the other hand, Iran could be a bigger threat to the US, because they could possibly be nuts enough to blow someone up, whereas Kim Jong-Il probably has enough sense to know that it's in his best interest of self-preservation not to anyone up.

Of course it is - now just determine which country is the most stupid, and answer accordingly. Grin

That's a little better. Grin

Seriously though, stupidity-anyone's stupidity, including ours- is the biggest threat to this country.

I voted Iran.

Kim Jong is just crazy and likes power.  He'd never do anything to seriously jeopardize his power.  (Nuking Seoul or Tokyo or Los Angeles would qualify).  Ahmadinejad on the other hand has goals.

I also read somewhere that Ahmadinejad isn't scared of the prospect of nuclear world war because he believes the twelfth imam would return in that situation.

Of course it is - I wasn't entirely joking the first time. Ignorance, stupidity, and the like are threats everywhere. And countries with higher degrees of stupidity in their leadership are usually greater threats, as they're less likely to consider the consequences of their actions.

Why do people see Iran as a threat.  Iran has constantly said they plan on using nuclear capabilities for recreational purposes; powering houses, providing electricity and such.  It's the media and George Bush claiming they plan to use it for making weapons.

Possibly it has to do with Iran's leadership saying that Isreal should be wiped off the map. I know Kim is a nutball and all, but from the looks of it North Korea isn't advocating any holy wars.

Given that Iran's leader is advocating one, you shouldn't blame people for being scheptical about everything that is said regarding their peaceful intentions with this program.

Stupidity is not a constant variable, however. Otherwise rational people (or leaders) can be driven to irrational things, while even the vilest of dictators (Stalin) could be cold and calculating.

The point is it's stupid to define the enemy as a country or individual rather than a type of behavior. By singling out a country you are denying the possibility or rational behavior on their part, and it is therefor irrational on your part. The us-versus-them mentality only feeds into the inevitable cycle of confrontation, which is the only way the U.S. could get hurt. In a world of rational states, the U.S. would never get hurt by such countries because the retaliation would be unacceptable. Thus the only way the U.S. could ever get hurt is irrationality i.e. stupidity. The 9/11 attack is exhibit #1-- irrational, suicidal religion, a damn the consequences attitude, and America gets hurt. Rational, intelligent states-- and America does not get hurt.

As I understand it, the waste products of nuclear reactors can be processed to make material for nuclear bombs.  Given that Ahmeni-whatsisface has made a bunch of threats like "Israel will be wiped off the face of the map", it's kind of easy to see where the suspicions come from.

Guys, the "Isreal should be bombed" comments only came after constant pressuring from Bush and his pushing that they'd use nukes for weapons.  After seeing what's happened to Iraq, it's perfectly understandable that Iran should have resentment towards American governmnet.  Yes, they may be run by dictators, however they never mentioned any threats before they were charged with using nuclear capabilities for weapons.  On that basis, we should stop badgering them, and they'll likely not harm us.

And that makes the comments unremarkable and not something to be concerned about?

If you ask a guy if he's going to murder someone and he says "yes", it seems to me that you should at least not completely ignore his response.
