For some reason, large segments of the woke left have decided to serve as useful idiots for Confederate sympathizers and parrot this badhistory uncritically.

It goes back to the late 1960s and early 1970s when many black nationalists began savaging Lincoln in order to attack MLK by extension.  The civil rights movement had rather openly and consciously used Lincoln's image.

Making matters worse, around the same time many of the "countercultural" types began interpreting literally every single event in American history as an extension of the Vietnam War. In their eyes, the Confederates were victims of "the man" and the reasons for the war ignored. You see this with the "both sides" attitude in Ken Burns Civil War documentary.
