Apart from the fact that he's clearly joking around, this doesn't hurt Biden with people who know anything about him because they know he has a deep affection and respect for the military.  OTOH, the reports of Trump's insults are credible because everybody knows he *doesn't* respect the military.  Previous impressions are important.

One thing I've noticed is that any attempt by the Trump camp to amplify a dubious attack or a fraud investigation against Biden just doesn't stick. The mainstream media is actually doing their jobs this time and not amplifying rightwing lies and smears like they did against Clinton.

There's also an element of "the boy who cried wolf" here.  Trump and his cronies have spread so many lies on a constant basis -- and most people other than his adherents understand this -- that anything new they say is automatically viewed with suspicion by the average person.
