Demographics and coalition shifts. The GOP was closer to its Eastern Establishment years in 1960 than in 1972. The party's center of gravity began moving to the South, the suburbs, and rural areas in 1968. So, fewer Republican voters, not necessarily McGovern being more popular than Kennedy.
