(was 15/16 and Democrat at the time, so wasn't following the GOP too closely)

When I think about the 2016 GOP Primary, watch old debates and events, and look at the candidates, I've never really understood why Dr. Carson went from winning polls to only getting 3% nationally.

Was it just the gaffes? Or something more to do with the campaign?

What made Cruz more of a viable Evangelical Conservative?

He was the most UN-charismatic candidate in the world Also he had a narrow base, college-educated and younger Whites.

He was unable to answer a question about foreign leaders when ISIS attacked France.

He was unable to answer a question about foreign leaders when ISIS attacked France.

In a more general sense: He was just as clueless as Trump, but not nearly as good at making it not matter to people.

Fun fact: Ben Carson was leading for a few weeks in the Republican primary in fall 2015.

Because he’s weak. People liked him because he basically had the gall to chastise Obama to his face at the Prayer Breakfast. Carson couldn't follow through. Trump could. They wanted someone brash and shameless.

He was the Herman Cain of 2016, a tremendously unqualified and loony flavour of the month candidate who only briefly lead the polls, I surmise, because there's a subsection of the GOP primary who are desperate to support a black candidate to show how not racist they are.

That reminds me of Tim Ryan when he was unable to tell the difference between Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Because he was an idiot and had no energy. Trump could project strength.

Just the timing. He was trying to be the political outsider at a time when Trump was also there. People focused on Trump instead. In another year, Carson might have had a shot
