Oh, you said modern.

Uh, Jonas Brothers. Same thing though.

Whoever made that, they were *not* Italian.

Then again people tried to answer "Lady Gaga"...

Well, from Mama Monster herself:

Purely out of curiosity, I googled to see if there were any vintage recordings of a castrato singing, and lo and behold:

You're probably familiar with this singer, but he had his testes removed as a child as a supposed "cure" for a medical condition he had, unlike most castrati who had it done purely for singing purposes. This was recorded when he was into his forties and recording devices were new. Gotta be honest that this really creeped me out and I'm glad it's no longer practiced.

To my knowledge he was the only castrato ever recorded, right?
I agree that it's pretty creepy.

To my knowledge, yes.

According to Wiki, this was recorded when he was past his prime though there is also debate over to what extent the taste and singing style of his time differs from ours.

It's a little less creepy if you listen to it without looking at his picture, but I can't get past the fact that he and so many other males went through all of adult life talking like Mickey Mouse impersonators because as children their singing voices were considered 'exceptional'.

Actually interesting stuff but still belongs in the second category.
