Speaker Dennis Hastert has long expressed a wish to, eventually, retire.  When he does retire, who will succeed him as second-in-line to the Presidency?

Potential Candidates:
John Boehner
Roy Blunt
Jim Sensenbrenner
Eric Cantor
Jerry Lewis
Jack Kingston

Your thoughts?  I would place Boehner as the most likely selection.

Usually the Speaker of the House is a member of the House.

although it isn't constitutionally required.

But I assume you know this, and I assume Assad was joking.

If you were referring to Roy Blunt, he is the father of Governor Matt Blunt.

A Democrat?

When you're talking about "eventually", and Republicans only have a 30 seat majority, there's no garuntee that in 2 or 3 congresses that they'll even have a majority.

I hope it's Boehner, mainly just because it would be comic relief every single time I saw that guy's name in the news.

Nancy Pelosi, though she will replace him in that position before he retires. Smiley

Silly me!  I intended to post this in the Congressional forum.  Pardon.

If the Dems take control of the House (God willing), they would not be so stupid as to elect that pile of trash Pelosi to the Speaker's chair.  There are FAR more qualified Democrats than Pelosi.

I agree that she is not my first choice.

Right, it is unlikely Democrats would replace her. Republicans weren't about to dump Newt Gingrich after winning control in 1994. And Pelosi is no more extreme than Gingrich was.

I agree. Sensenbrenner is not only an embarassment to the GOP, but an embarassment to U.S. politics in general. Any of the others listed would at least be credible.
