Quote
Mutinous soldiers detained Mali’s president and prime minister Tuesday after surrounding a residence and firing into the air in an apparent coup attempt after several months of demonstrations calling for President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s ouster.

The soldiers moved freely through the streets of Bamako, making it increasingly clear that they were in control of the capital city. There was no immediate comment from the soldiers, who hail from the very same military barracks in Kati where an earlier coup originated more than eight years ago.

A regional official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to journalists, confirmed that the president and prime minister had been detained Tuesday evening.
In general, it’s a really bad idea to rig elections during a worldwide pandemic.

The situation across the Sahel - but especially in the "three borders" area between Mali, Niger and Burkina Fas has been degrading rapidly this year - with an upsurge in jihadi violence and increasing doubts over the ineffectiveness of the French anti-Jihadist "operation Barkhane" in the region - and growing anti-French sentiment on the back of it.

In that respect it's not at all surprising to see it coming to this, but painful nonetheless

Well it’s the first Not!Coup of this decade because the soldiers responsible say they aren’t conducting a coup at all. 🤔

The 203rd decade of the common era doesn't begin until next year.

Nobody counts decades sequentially like that. Decades are referred to as the “n0s”, n being the third digit of the year. The 20s began in 2020 and will end in 2029

I'll grant it's not common, primarily because worrying about decades is a fairly recent phenomenon. But it's same issue as whether 2000 was the first or the last year of a century.

It’s not really the same issue. The difference is that centuries and millennia are sequentially numbered. The 1st Century AD started in 1 and ended in 100, and the 21st Century AD started in 2001 and will end in 2100. Those sequentially numbered centuries are the things referred to when talking about centuries without any other context.

That’s not how people treat decades. When people (like the original poster) refer to the “current decade” they are referring to the set of years that began in 2020 and will end in 2029. The 203rd Decade AD begins in 2021 and ends in 2030, but that’s not what anyone is referring to when they refer to decades without other context.

It was a joke, son. You're overthinking it.

Qadaffi armed and supplied Islamist militants in northern Mali (Azawan region IIRC?) for years. When he fell, many of his loyalist fled into northern Mali and have been active there ever since. I remember in 2013 that the French intervened to prevent Timbuktu.

Political instability and violence + the presence of Salafi jihadists = not good!

Qadaffi armed and supplied half of West Africa with oil and gas to get them hooked into his economic regime.

When I worked in Mali, the offsiders I had were Islamic militant supporters of Qadaffi. I wanted their T-Shirts which had his face on them silhouetted in white on brown.

Rare as hens teeth.

Their real God was Bob Marley, so they are pretty chill until they get fired up and start shooting people.

There was no year 0, so it's the last year of the decade.

I have nothing more to say about this that I haven't already said a month ago. "The current decade" or just "the decade" is the 20s, which began this year and will end in 2029.

The one advantage of the n0s method is it let us have the naughty naughties.

What was the preexisting situation in Mali, exactly? This is their second coup/change-in-regime in a few years, right?
