This is nice, on the Georgia changes.  I was just about to get an absentee ballot application to mail in, but now I'll wait for this.

Quote
Another emergency rule also authorizes the secretary of state's office to create an online portal that will allow voters to request absentee ballots and provide local officials with a centralized database to send out ballots.

Ryan Germany, general counsel for the secretary of state's office, said the new portal would be similar to Georgia's online voter registration system, and absentee applications would be matched with the name, date of birth and driver's license number in the voter registration system. The portal is expected to be unveiled later this week or early next week.

Here's something all Republicans should spend a little time thinking about:

I'm generally not scared by this kind of stuff, and am definately not a concern troll on this forum, but this does really concern me that Trump could maybe just eek out a win through this, with obvious forms of voter suppression. We need to get the story out there to encourage as many as possible to vote in person if possible, and those who get their ballot send them right away, maybe even physically go to the post office.

I'm going to request an absentee ballot as soon as the new website is up, and will either drop my ballot in a drop box (new this year) or hand deliver it to the county elections office.

A federal judge in Pennsylvania told the Trump campaign and the Republican Party that they must produce evidence they have of vote-by-mail fraud in the state by Friday.

The judge's order, in a high-profile case about vote-by-mail in the battleground state, essentially forces the Trump campaign to try to back up President Donald Trump's false claims about massive voter fraud in postal voting.

The judge, J. Nicholas Ranjan, was appointed by Trump.

I don't think this is necessarily bad or even anything new. It basically just the postal service telling the states that ballots that were put in the mail a day or two before election day might not arrive by the deadlines the states have set. States should change their laws to allow for the counting of ballots that were postmarked on or before election day

I think what they're saying is that the deadlines to request ballots may be too late for the voters to receive them in time.  Here in Georgia, you can request an absentee ballot as late as the Friday before the election (the application must be received by the county election office by then).  It's very possible that ballots mailed out on applications arriving that late wouldn't be delivered before the following Tuesday.

If you're going to vote by mail, request your ballot as early as possible, and return it as early as possible (by mail if necessary, or preferably to a ballot dropbox or hand delivery to the election office).

This is an excellent example of why a free and active press is essential to a functioning democracy.  The publicity generated by the reporting of the removals is undoubtedly why they've been suspended.  Without it, they would have quietly continued.

Voters in North Carolina have received absentee ballot request forms in the mail with Trump's face on them.

Somebody in one of the several USPS threads asked about the security of drop boxes for absentee ballots (I can't find the original post).  Here's a bit on Georgia's drop boxes, which are new this year:

Quote
To avoid the potential for mail delivery delays, Georgia voters can return their absentee ballots in drop boxes set up in many counties, according to rules the State Election Board passed this year.

Absentee ballot drop boxes must be located on government property and monitored by video cameras for security. They also must be securely fastened and built with a slot that prevents ballot tampering, damage or removal.

Surprised it took until almost 11:30 Pacific for that to get posted here

Honestly nobody in this country cares, or even understands it, so why should it get such immediate attention?

Dude, take a break from the news & this board and get some rest. It's really getting to you this weekend.

It's almost like you're a.....progressive pessimist Huh

No, he's just the opposite: a pessimistic progressive. Smiley

Very refreshing to see Georgia in the news for a positive (& I don't mean a positive COVID test).

We also got our new absentee ballot request site on line on Friday.  Very quick and easy to use!

Uh, so what are the implications of this?

Not much? In many (most?) states, the voter files are publicly accessible, usually for a relatively small fee.

As expected, the Georgia SoS has appealed a federal judge's ruling that absentee ballots may be counted if received up to three days after Election Day (if postmarked by then).

A federal judge indicated in court Friday that she’s considering whether to require paper backup copies of voter information at Georgia polling places, a move that could help keep lines moving if there are problems on Election Day.

Trump should be impeached and removed just for this, not to mention the 100 other things he's done that warrant it.

Dems obsession with preventing people who aren't voting for them from voting at all is going to make it harder for Dem voters to get their ballots in on time, possibly throwing the state to Trump.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/13/politics/2020-election-pennsylvania-ballot-delay/index.html

Quote
The state's Democratic Party remains in court battling to keep the Green Party off the ballot. The pending legal dispute has led to a delay in certification of the November ballot, and as a result, all Pennsylvania county election officials who this year could have started offering absentee or mail-in ballots, as well as in-person early absentee voting, starting September 14 are in a holding pattern.

This is a dumb statement. Challenging another party's qualification for the ballot in no way prevents a single voter from casting a ballot.
