Welcome to the side that prides itself on aiding poors, blacks, and others who can't provide for themselves.

Blacks can't provide for themselves?

A great deal of them cannot or struggle to, in disproportionate ratios to the white population.

Because among southerners, it is proper social etiquett to say "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing strangers, or those older than yourself, or in a higher position of authority.

We don't expect Yankees to understand.  Wink

I only use "sir" in a formal situation, with age being irrelevant unless they are much younger than me.  Otherwise it feels weird.  Mostly I just call my parents "idiot" and "mom," respectively, anyway. Wink

That is the different then most people in the south and people in other parts of the nation.  I say "sir" and "ma'ma" all the time. When my parents ask me to do some I say yes sir or yes ma'ma. Its that or you get slaped across your face. Also you say it to older people and people you don't know.

Welcome, Josh!  It's great to have more socially conservative Southerners joining the Democrats.  Frodo, Preston, and myself would be glad to bring you into our community and we can prove to you that you can be religious and still be a Democrat.  Best of luck to you in the future.

Yes, welcome Josh Smiley, it's just a shame I can't join Blue Lion, Frodo, Preston and your good self as a Blue Dog (not for real anyway Sad )

Well, I find it quite odd being in the same party. I'll accept any new Democrats, always good news.

No, it actually works pretty good. Chivalry is rare, child beating is rarer.

Boy, when I was growing up I got beatings, and they didn't feel good at all. I hated it when we had to go pick out our own switch!

No. Most people I know would consider that child abuse. And no one cares what you say here. I don't think I've ever heard someone call someone else sir or ma'am in casual conversation.

We say it all the time when talking to our parents, when asked to do something.

Geez, no!  I did not know that people even did that anymore.  Around here, spanking is controversial.  That would solidly be considered abusive by most people here, I'm afraid.

Whenever my parents asked me to do something it'd go something like this:

Parent: Zack, will you ______?
Me: Uh, I hate that but whatever. Just let me wait till my show hits a commercial/song is over.
Parent: Yeah, whatever. Just do it then.

Wouldn't you rather instill respect, instead of fear?  I could never respect my parents if they slapped me for not following their orders.  After all, they are not necessarily right all of the time; I have my right to express my opinion.  I can understand punishment when misbehaving, but wouldn't being given time out be more effective than making your kid scared of you?

That's just how I grew up, though.

Some times time outs work, but you do what they say when they say it. If it don't break they law or anything like that. Also I didn't grow up scared of my mom and dad, I respect them for doing that to me.

Well...yes, it actually does break the law.  If they did it to another adult, they could be charged with assault, and there is no different standard for children.  I won't pass judgement on it beyond saying that I'm glad it's fairly exclusive to a part of the country which I don't live in.
