Which American state is the most homophobic to the point where a gay or lesbian person would be in grave danger, sadly in 2020? Sad.

Probably Alabama or Mississippi. Both voted against marriage equality by a wide margin, and they have a small percentage of LGBTQ+ people compared to the national average.

Alabama or Mississippi are good guesses and are probably right, but I also think Arkansas and Tennessee are worth a look; TN in particular has a lot of draconian anti-LGBT legislation.

I like how the most common answer is the same as the stereotypical answer to the question "Which U.S. state is the most racist?"

And if you go by the (wrong) idea that homophoby is coincident to opposition to same-sex marriage, Alabama and Mississippi are the best answer.

I don't know which U.S. state is the most homophobic, and probably it is impossible to know. Data on racism always seem to have flaws, and I imagine that data on homophoby are likely more scarce and more inconclusive.

Why am I writing such a long answer to a bronz thread, by the way?

Well, a smaller percentage of people willing to openly admit it. Probably a reason foe that though.

Kentucky is actually not too bad on this issue, at least for a southern state. An openly gay man got a sizable share of the vote for senate in 2016. Kim Davis was voted out of office after her anti-gay marriage stunt. A surprising number of small towns and rural counties have passed laws protecting gay rights.

I don't think Buffalo compares to extremely Republican cities like Vidor, TX.

The methodology on this is...extremely questionable.

Oh I agree but in terms of measuring homophobia in a country where ssm is legal, I can't find anything better. It's not something that is easy to quantify.

No.

I have nothing to do with same sex marriage at all.

I'm just asking the question.

Mississippi passed ban on just gay marriage in 2004 with 86%.  Alabama passed a ban a gay marriage AND civil unions with 81% in 2006.  Tennessee passed a ban on just gay marriage with the same percentage that same year.

For whatever it’s worth.

No doubt, but honestly I think anecdotal evidence is almost worth more in this case than a study which draws such erroneous conclusions from such a wide net.

As a queer person, I know I throw around f** occasionally with friends, and if I were a little more edgy I'd probably use it on social media too. So you're already going to be picking up people in the marginalized group using the slur, which will matter.

Plus using a slur isn't a perfect measure of attitudes toward another group. A bro in Tonawanda may use f** while playing CoD with his buddies or whatever. But he's probably cooler with gay people than a wealthy suburban couple in Shelby County who would never dream of being so vulgar.

I know you caveated with the FWIW, but I don't think citing 2004 numbers on SSM is at all relevant to homophobia in 2020.

I was at the Kim Davis rally with Mike Huckabee. Smiley

Probably Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. Maybe South Carolina, Indiana, and Missouri as well could be added to the list.
