US: Detroit (to live)/NYC (to visit) (overall: Detroit)
France: Paris (to visit and to live)
Belgium: Brussels (only major French speaking city with a lot of cultural and economic activity) (to visit and to live, although I'd ideally more live in the suburbs)
Germany: Munich
Italy: Florence
UK: Bath

I only took countries I've travelled extensively enough in to really say.

I only know the top three well enough to say where I'd want to live.

Then for countries where I've been to some places but not to others but where I can imagine what my favorite city would be:
Spain: Madrid I'd suppose (I've never been but from what I know about it I think I'd like it very much)
Canada: Montreal (same as for Madrid)

In most countries I've been to I've only really been to one or two so I can't really say. In the countries where I can:

UK: Portsmouth - I like the sea front with a lot of open space and the view across to the Isle of Wight.
Cyprus: Limassol - A good combination of a lot of interesting historical sites in and near the city, plus some nice beaches.

USA: San Francisco
Mexico: Mazatlan
France: Hmmm. Tough one, but I think I’d have to go with Paris.
Monaco: It’s a city-state of rich snobs
Canada: Didn’t go to any real cities. Cardston, AB was the only town I visited.

USA: I've only been to Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Dayton, Orlando, and Dallas.

Of those probably Orlando or Dallas, I once had a run in with Immigration at the Canadian border in Detroit when trying to go to Comerica.

Riomaggiore!! Now you are a big FF (although my favorite of the Cinque Terre is Monterosso)

I presume you have been to my city (La Spezia), then?

I have! I don't think we stopped there, but I distinctly remember getting lost there somehow while "Call Me Maybe" was playing on the radio. I don't think we knew the difference between each of the towns before we went, we were just trying to get to Cinque Terre to see it and happened to end up in Riomaggiore. Are the other towns pretty similar, or what's different about them?

Well, they are mostly similar to each other, with old houses on both sides of a very narrow and steep "valley" of a brook, but their differences are:

Riomaggiore has one main valley, and a smaller one where the station is
Monterosso has one valley but also a more recent part of the town with an asphalted street along the sea, and a much longer sandy beach than the others
Corniglia is different because it is on a promontory, not along a brook
Vernazza has the valley but leans a bit against a promontory
Manarola has the valley but leans a lot against a promontory

Monterosso is also much less steep

Basically

Yet another thread we have every month. And another geographical one for which it would take way too long for me to make an exhaustive list. It'd also be too easy to have a list where 3/4 of the favorites were the biggest city in the country. So here's a list of cities >100k and excluding largest cities:

US: Lexington, KY
Canada: Montreal
UK: Edinburgh
France: Montpellier
Portugal: Setubal
Spain: Murcia
Italy: Padua
Switzerland: Basel
Netherlands: Leiden
Germany: Cologne
Poland: Krakow
Austra: Innsbruck
Czechia: Pilsen
Israel: Haifa
Malaysia: Penang
Indonesia: Yogyakarta
China: Hangzhou
Taiwan: Yilan
Japan: Fukuoka

Only using cities where I have been.

Italy: excluding La Spezia where I reside, I would say Florence.
France: Strasbourg
Switzerland: ??
Liechtenstein: I only visited Vaduz.
Austria: Salzburg
Germany: Heidelberg
San Marino: I have zero memories and I only visited San Marino proper.
Vatican City: self-explanatory...
Slovenia: Nova Gorica was finer than Portorož.
Croatia: Novigrad was finer than Buzet.
United Kingdom: I only visited Belfast.
Ireland: Dublin (the Cliffs of Moher are not "a city")
Russia: I only visited Moscow.
Portugal: Well I guess Lisbon's airport was legitimate.
United States: Washington on many levels but man Key West is close to perfect.

US:  San Francisco
Canada:  Montréal
France:  Paris (I really like Nice too though)
Spain:  Barcelona
Italy:  Naples

Other countries I’ve been to (UK, Ireland, Sweden, Honduras, etc.) I haven’t really travelled around enough to have a “favorite” city

London, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Toronto, plus the sole "city" of a couple Caribbean island nations.
