Rob Bishop has resigned from the commission. This late in the process, is he going to have to be replaced?

Reason for resignation is frustration with the commission drifting away from his approach to having gerrymandered urban-rural mix districts.

Bishop wants a bunch of rurban seats? odd
Rurban districts is how you gerrymander Utah in favor of the Republicans.

(Note: This is just at the congressional level, none of the commissioners were advocating for rurban school board or state legislative districts)

On the other hand, a "big rural" district (aka everything but BE, WB, CA, RI, DA counties in the north; a Salt Lake CD; and one CD taking in the rest of Salt Lake County and all of Utah County as needed) is generally favorable to Dems in terms of results. If Utah ever shifts enough towards Dems, such a plan might even give Ds a tie in seats while losing by high single digits statewide.

You can actually have a compact two Biden district map right now, though it's no guarantee either district would vote dem down-ballot.

What is it with redistricting commissions all having one pigheaded weirdo who insists on pushing their harebrained plans on everyone else? Colorado, Michigan and now Utah all have one (Virginia too maybe?).

Brad Wilson is not going to replace Bishop, so it's a six member commission from now on. Hoping the legislature doesn't use this as an excuse to throw out their maps (though that may have been the point).

You could make it a bit easier on yourself by putting Park City into one of the Biden districts.

Ah, that's true. That was not optimized, merely it was a proof of concept. But I also wanted to avoid having no road connectivity whatsoever. As far as I'm aware, Box Elder and Tooele have no road link of any kind. Avoiding Summit going into one of the Biden seats makes this a non-issue.

The commission is sending the second best version of my third best congressional map to the state legislature.

Just split Summit. Eastern Summit is quite Republican anyway.

Impressive work. You did it better than me.
"The number of Democratic seats closest to proportional is two. The likely number of Democratic seats is 1.45. The likely number of unexpected Democratic seats (won) lost is 0.55."
This is a tangible increase from my map, which had 1.24.

Really 2 options the commision had here. Either just draw the SLC D district and don't give any legitimacy to the Utah GOP or the other option was to draw an even swingier Utah 4th and hope the Utah GOP takes them up on it if it still leans R.

So which the three maps getting sent to the legislature?

EDIT: Nevermind, @Redistrictnetwork provided. They are all a bit weird in their own ways.

It's unfortunate that they didn't take any essentially normal maps. I don't quite understand why the first map combined Tooele with the northern counties; it doesn't seem to be motivated by any other decisions on the map.

That said, all three do create a safe D district rather than cracking SLC, and none is a real gerrymander, so it's hard to be too unhappy. The second option might even have a second competitive seat by the end of the decade, though hard to be certain just based on this image.

No surprise to anyone, the commission was cast aside before they even had a chance to present their work. What a sham.

I'm in an absolutely packed meeting where the independent commission is presenting its maps to the legislative committee. Will post a video (or audio) on demand link once the meeting is over and the vod is up.

Thanks for the link.
I hope you had a great time! It's cool you are actually able to be part of the redistricting process. That's more than the vast majority of us can claim.

Big surprise, Utah is likely going to completely ignore the commission and just pass this ugly piece of crap. It has the same number of county splits as the current map (5) but now Salt Lake County is split between all four districts instead of three and it splits Salt Lake City itself, which the current map does not do.
