Those regions of Maryland, Eastern Shore and Western Maryland, why are those areas so conservative-leaning?

Other than John Delaney, David Trone and Frank Kratovil, which Maryland Democrats can appeal to that region?

MD-06 elects democrats because it extends almost to the D.C. border.

MD-01 has more in common with white parts of the South than with the rest of the state, and Western Maryland is basically West Virginia. And as Weatherboy said, MD-06 is a Dem district because it was gerrymandered to include liberal DC suburbs.

MD-06 covers the heavily Republican Appalachian region in Western Maryland, but it's Democratic, because it extends to Montgomery County and was drawn specifically to draw out far-right Republican Roscoe Bartlett. MD-01 covers the Eastern shore and is essentially a GOP pack, but in 2022, the Democratic controlled Maryland legislature might try to gerry it as well by adding either Annapolis or Baltimore.

MD-01 is more rural for one. Salisbury is the largest city in the Eastern Shore.
MD-06 covers the Appalachian portion of MD, which is basically WV. However, it votes D because it was gerrymandered into Montgomery County.

It's worth noting that MD-01 also includes some hard R outer suburbs of Baltimore too, which are a decent chunk of the district demographically.

I've driven through both areas quite a few times.  The Western part of Maryland felt basically Southern.  The eastern part had a lot of farm areas... saw quite a few farms where the roofs had "TRUMP" or "MAGA" or "TRUMP 2020" painted on it.  Seemed less culturally Southern to me but also felt pretty rural and conservative.

Of course these places aren't very populated so they take in more suburban parts of the state.  But there are clearly solid conservative areas that are completely disjointed from the rest of Maryland/DC/Baltimore culture.

Isn’t there a decent chance MD-01 takes in PG?

No, it is needed for the AA VRA seat and also it's needed to keep Hoyer's seat as both heavily Democratic and white, to prevent him losing a primary or a GE, it's far likelier that MD-01 crosses a bridge to take in Annapolis, but a likely third AA seat makes that quite difficult.

You don’t think MD-01 might take in a Annapolis and a few of the whiter areas of PG?
