WASHINGTON - Succumbing to scandal, former Majority Leader Tom Delay intends to resign from Congress within weeks, closing out a career that blended unflinching conservatism with a bare-knuckled political style.

DeLay is scheduled to appear on Fox News Channel Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. ET.

Republican officials said Monday night they expect the Texan to quit his seat later this spring. He was first elected in 1984, and conceded he faced a difficult race for re-election.

I'm a bit surprised he's decided to quit.  I thought he would at least just finish his term and not run for re-election.

Maybe he's doing it to give the advantage of incumbency to the Republican who would win the special election.  The CD is about 60-40 Rep, and the Reps have a strong backbench in the area.

Or maybe he's doing it because he's about to be led off to jail by the Abramoff biz or what his former aide told people.

Or maybe he's afraid of what Ronnie Earle has in store for him..  (lol)

I really have no idea.

Well, I've no sympathy for Tom DeLay. He'll get what's coming to him, one way or another Grin

I was hoping he'd run for re-election like a stubborn mule; it'd give Democrats the best chance they'd ever get to win in TX-22. Smiley

I think there are many reasons for Delay pulling out. The one I found most interesting was that he can now convert his 1 million dollar plus campaign war chest into his legal defense fund that was drying up quickly. I found it odd that he could do that legally, but it appears he can and is.

Tom DeLay, now that he is free from the political realities of Congress and re-election, seems much more like he used to be, a strongly faith based conservative Republican.

I have hope that DeLay will manage to remain effective in the conservative movement within the United States.

DeLay does seem to function better the fewer realities he is subjected to.

I hope Tom DeLay now will proceed to get hit by a truck, then all will be right with the world.
