It's also really in character for Trump.

On the one hand, I agree very much. On the other hand, after seeing the last five years of American history, I have become convinced that there's a point of no return after which Trump cannot back down voluntarily from a stunt because it has intoxicated him too much with power.

Anyway, I believe that such a situation would have created a summer full of pains in the asses for the Republican Party. If somehow they managed to put up Evan McMullin, he would have very good chances. I wonder if the media would have downplayed "the damn emails" because they didn't need a contrast to all the salacious Trump stories, or if they would have overplayed them even more because otherwise the race would have been boring*. I also think that Stein would have received more votes and Johnson less.

*we all know that scandals make views and "Clinton's plan for veterans" does not.
