What if Trump dropped out after winning the nomination (but before the GOP convention), and Evan McMullin was named the nominee at the convention?

Could he beat Hillary?

Why would he drop out in this scenario?

Same reason he didn't run in 2012?

Easily. And he'd probably be very popular, too.

Unfortunately not a very realistic scenario.

So he goes all the way to clinching the nomination and then says it was all a publicity stunt? Wow

It's also really in character for Trump.

On the one hand, I agree very much. On the other hand, after seeing the last five years of American history, I have become convinced that there's a point of no return after which Trump cannot back down voluntarily from a stunt because it has intoxicated him too much with power.

Anyway, I believe that such a situation would have created a summer full of pains in the asses for the Republican Party. If somehow they managed to put up Evan McMullin, he would have very good chances. I wonder if the media would have downplayed "the damn emails" because they didn't need a contrast to all the salacious Trump stories, or if they would have overplayed them even more because otherwise the race would have been boring*. I also think that Stein would have received more votes and Johnson less.

*we all know that scandals make views and "Clinton's plan for veterans" does not.
