A profile of Karen Bass as a potential Biden running mate suggested that if she were elected Vice President, she would not seek the presidency later (obviously, this is all subject to change, as she is twelve years younger than Biden, and the first woman elected to national office would have significant support if she has served honorably in the role.) But I'm curious about those dynamics.

If Biden only serves one term, what would shape a Democratic primary in which his Vice President isn't seeking the presidency? How could that affect the Republican race?

Would ambitious candidates accept cabinet positions as launching pads for presidential bids? Who would be seen as the initial frontrunners?
