Quote
Army propaganda is unnervingly common in the United States—to the point that many living in the U.S. barely even notice it. But the Army’s esports branch continues to receive criticism for its methods on Twitch. Its Twitch channel goes a step further than standard propaganda, with recruiters playing video games and leveraging Twitch’s potent ability to build parasocial relationships to convince impressionable young people to enlist (the Army’s channel is not locked behind any sort of age gate). In addition, the ACLU and other legal organizations have said that the Army channel’s tendency to ban users for asking questions is unconstitutional on the grounds that the government can’t legally forbid speech on the basis of viewpoint.

1.the US Army should be allowed to recruit online without being harassed (even if the harassers have a point)
2.the US Army should be allowed to advertise towards things young people enjoy
3.the US Army should not be doing shady advertising to get kid's info

This is exhibit A in why we need to reinstate the draft.

So the Army doesn't do shady, unconstitutional crap like this.

Yeah I dont have a moral problem with the 2nd part. The first is quite iffy.

I certainly appreciate the 1st Amendment concerns and think they would lose if it goes to court over it.  But Twitter doesn't let other users get harassed and while I agree that the US Army (or any govt entity) is clearly not like other standard users, I feel if it's actual harassment (spamming) and making it difficult/impossible for them to do what they're trying to do that blocking those users should be allowed.  Would we want the Peace Corps Twitter feed to filled with links to all the stories of their people getting raped/murdered by locals?

to add to my earlier observations...
4.it seems they shut it down as soon as this hit the news
5.it's not a particularly good way to recruit and is probably a waste of money

Imagine thinking this is more unconstitutional than the draft lol. Anyway, the draft is never, ever acceptable and if the military can't get enough popular support to raise a sufficient army, then it's either engaged in a conflict it shouldn't be in or it offering inadequate compensation for soldiers.

Wait, so the US army is recruiting people using Twitch and video games?

Tbh the US army recruiters don't deserve to be harrassed, but such methods deserve to be mocked to death until they stop lmao

Did they seek inspiration from the Simpsons or something? Is the US army that desperate for recruits?

(yes I know that Simpsons thing is probably based off something in real life and not the other way around but I still find it funny)

Video games are part of the reason The Army can't find qualified recruits. Too much soda, fast food, and sitting has made a lot of the kids who want to join the military too fat and stupid to pass basic qualifications.

The Armed forces did have a big push a few years ago to recruit more IT, programmers, and people who could operate drone technology so called 'cyber warriors' and they proposed dropping physical standards for these recruits but I don't remember where that went.
