Is it really that bad of an idea, especially considering that the privatized prison system and minimum sentencing laws incentivize a bloated prison population whose only real purpose is to give a cheap source of labor to private corporations? Hmmm, it’s almost like that was the point from the very outset. Convict leasing is still very much a thing in many states, is effectively slavery by another name, and disproportionately targets Black people. And in these respects, AOC is right on the money: we need fewer prisons, reintegration of ex-convicts into the general population, and a re-evaluation of the role of prisons and incarceration in our legal system.
