It had to happen sooner or later.

I wonder how Dan Snyder will manage to bungle this.

Good. Regardless of whatever arguments could potentially be made in favor of keeping the names of teams like the Chiefs, Indians, Blackhawks, Etc, and despite any debate that could be held over the issue of cultural appropriation vs. sporting tradition, how could anyone in their right mind defend the propriety of naming a sports team the Redskins?!?

Dan Snyder looking like a strong frontrunner for PMT's 2021 'Takie Award' for Lib of the Year. The Chris Long dynasty is buried, and he won't be making a comeback.

The Edmonton Eskimos will be next.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton_Eskimos

"The team's name has drawn controversy and criticism, as the term 'eskimo" is considered in Canada to be a racial slur against the Inuit."

Honest good-faith question: do Alberta, Yukon, NW Territory and Nunavut indigeonous people actually take issue with the name, or is it mostly white liberals? I genuinely don't really know and this is a serious question.

By and large they self-refer as Inuit and not as Eskimo. They generally don't care for the term Esquimaux. Whether they object to having a sports team named after them, I have nary an idea, but Edmonton Inuit would lose the alliteration, so if Edmonton does change the name, I can't see them switching to that.

88 years of history flushed down the toilet for what? Overwhelming majority of Native Americans doesn't have problem with name, but some White American "entrepreneurs" are just well pathetic creatures. Anyway nfl is seeing its last days, hope that corona crisis will finish that corrupt league down.

It is possible that the NFL could be in decline, CTE, etc.

Dodgers, Rams, and Lakers should change their name because of cultural appropriation.

88 years of history flushed down the toilet for what?

I just checked, and it turns out that Sammy Baugh’s record still shows him playing for Washington.  So it looks like none of the team’s history has been lost.

Oh good, no one has posted the "90% of Native Americans are not offended" poll yet. I'll preemptively post this one, then:

https://news.berkeley.edu/2020/02/04/native-mascots-survey/

Quote
Contrary to polls showing that relatively few Native Americans take offense at the Washington Redskins’ name, a new UC Berkeley study has found that at least half of more than 1,000 Native Americans surveyed are offended by the football team’s 87-year-old moniker and Native mascots in general.

I always thought Eskimo was a cool name. Do we have to change our colloquial phrases now?

"He could sell ice to the Eskimos"

Has now become:

"He could sell ice to the Inuits".

Doesn't have the same ring to it.

I mean, yeah. The name is pretty racist, so we should be all for this change. Hopefully we can end the legacy of personifying groups of people as mascots.

Possible sure. But their audiences have been growing recently. If they pay enough, people will be willing to play. Plus they've nerfed the game considerably to make it safer.

I'm genuinely astonished that they're actually going through with it and not just "considering" it. Imagine if their next name is even more racist though! They should just play it safe and, to quote Joe Gatto from 'Impractical Jokers:' "pick a bird!"
