Sometimes it can be misleading to look at a map of election results by county, marked by party winner and margin of victory. When we look at the views of various voters on certain issues, we often see that Democratic-heavy geographies don't equal socially liberal voters. Likewise, we often see that Republican-heavy geographies do not necessarily equal socially conservative voters. For example, in areas of rural Alabama, Democrats dominate in an area called the, "Black Belt." However, these Democratic voters tend to be as conservative on abortion/gay rights as their Republican counterparts. Comparatively, we see in areas of educated Republican suburbs that these voters vote GOP because of their economic views. These voters tend to be just as liberal on abortion/gay rights as their Democratic counterparts. In the following areas, what are the reasons that you think voters tend to choose Democrats over Republicans?: 1. Northeast Ohio (Particularly in the Summit and Mahoning counties areas) 2. Northern Coastal California (North of San Francisco along the Pacific coast) 3. Suburban Philadelphia (Particularly Bucks and Delaware counties areas) 4. Coastal Maine (Areas north of Portland, along the Atlantic coast) 5. Central Alabama (Areas along the Alabama River, that have a significant African-American population)
