Rasmussen

Allen = 56
Miller = 27

Allen = 54
Webb = 30

Interesting that 39% favor a ban on abortions (these are the people that would never vote for a democrat even with a gun to their heads.)

Webb is an unknown to most. Don't give up so easily.

He just announced his entry into the race two weeks ago!! Give him some time to make this race competitive.

Virginians don't appear to be looking for a reason to toss Allen, and this poll seems to confirm it.  Even if it tightens up, this seat is probably safe in the end.

Agreed.  The best Webb can do is to bring Allen's victory to below 60% of the vote.  If he achieves that feat, then Allen will be damaged as Presidential material for 2008.  I think Webb can do this; even so Allen wins 59%-40% or thereabouts.

I still don't see any reason why Allen would be in trouble.  His approval ratings are strong; he hasn't done anything that would seem to alienate voters.

Granted, I think Webb will pull better 30%, but most Democrats would.  The simple fact is that it is hard to beat incumbents in the Senate, period.

I also think that Webb has a chance of hurting Allen's chances for president, but that's it.

Allen would have to do something really insane and/or scandalous for him to lose. However, I think he could get under 60%, which would hurt his chances of getting far in running for President.

correct.  if allen ever was in any danger you would have seen a bigger name in the race instead of some insurance salesman named webb.

I guess Soaring Eagle was spot on in his comment. In my (and others'!) defence, given how close the race was, Allen would almost certainly have won had he not turned into such an idiot.

Of course, if he were not an idiot, then he would not be George Allen, and we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Wink

Granted, Allen pretty much made it competitive for him. Tongue

They weren't looking for one... but Allen pushed some into their faces anyways. Smiley

Of course, but Webb was also an excellent candidate. Do you think we'd be talking about Senator-elect Harris Miller right now, even with the "macaca moment", if he had won the nomination?

Miller would have lost I think, given how close the race was.
