Even though I am an independent, my default position is still to usually support the republican. But there are definitely exceptions. One of which would be Roy Barnes. I would have supported him in 2002, and I think that he was unfairly kicked out of office over a nothing issue. (That being the state flag.)

There are several elections that I would've voted for an Independent or third party candidate without hindsight.

2002 MT Sen is the only election in recent times in which I would have voted for the R.

Many. In 2018, I would have voted for Charlie Baker, Phil Scott and Larry Hogan for governor. Would also have voted for the Terminator twice (but no on recalling Gray Davis).

The last presidential election I would have voted Republican is 1976. Gerald Ford deserved a full term. In 1980, I may have voted for John B. Anderson, depending on the state. If a tossup, I would have voted for Carter to prevent Reagan from winning. In the 1968 primaries, I would have voted on the Republican side in an open primary to support Nelson Rockefeller.

You mean 2008?

I'd go with 2008 Montana Senate too. Also there are plenty of times where I might have voted third party instead of Democrat but that's about it for Republicans (at least since 2000 or so).

CA-Insurance Commissioner 2018. I voted for independent Steve Poizner, who was the de facto Republican nominee.

In Belgium all elections before 2014 basically. I did vote for the candidate other than my party in 2014 but with hindsight I wouldn't.

In America. There are few elections where I would've voted for the Republican. With hindsight, maybe Josh Hawley in Missouri, but that's a big maybe. I'm not particulary keen on Claire McCaskill and Hawley ran a good campaign. The other election where I could've voted for the Republican was in the Florida senate, and of course I refuse to vote for Dianne Feinstein, unless she runs against a sexual predator.

For presidential election, of course 2016 presidential election stands out where I would have voted for a candidate other than my party, Donald Trump. Before that, i have to go a long way back to vote for a Republican, but Teddy Roosevelt is a given, unless I would've voted for the socialist candidate Eugene V. Debs.

Back when I still considered myself a Republican, I always voted for the Democrat in TN-04 and also voted for McMullin for President.

So basically, I won't vote for any nominee who is like DesJarlais or Trump, even if I consider myself a part of that party.

Oh, also I totally would have voted for Ben West Jr if I had ever gotten the opportunity, dude was cool irl. Still bummed he died.

2018 Orange County, California District Attorney: Todd Spitzer (R). The general election was between average Republican Todd Spitzer and corrupt incumbent Republican Tony Rackauckas.

In 2011 there was a special election for the State House seat I would live in if I lived a few blocks south. No Republican filed but another liberal candidate did as an independent. Guy was a total class act in every way, he even issued a statement after the election when the Democrat won praising her for her progressive stances and the historic case of the first Native American woman elected to the Minnesota legislature and first known LGBT Native American elected in the country. The Democrat wasn't bad at all but I'd have a tough time not voting for that guy.

The only recent presidential election in which that is even a remote possibility is 1988.

Add in those Northeastern governors and a few Utah Republicans.

Had I lived in Warringah I likely would have supported Zali Steggel (Ind.) over Tony Abbott (Lib.) in the 2019 federal election on the basis that the latter is a climate change denier and the former is essentially a Turnbullite who emphasised more responsiveness in regards to environmental issues.

US presidential 2008 (if I was old enough to vote then) is the first one that comes to mind for a past election.

I consider myself basically a Democratic-affiliated Independent because of where I am on the issues. If the GOP was more moderate I would probably not lean toward any party (at least I think so).
