16 years ago today, the NY Post ran a cover saying Kerry has picked SD Senator Dick Gephardt as his running mate. The next day, Kerry chose Edwards as his VP pick.

What if he chose Gephardt instead?

Only IA flips. 279-259. MO would've been closer but a 7 point gap would've been too much for any running mate to close.

270-268. Kerry ekes a win due to MO.

Other than flipping Missouri, I'm not sure what Gephardt brings to the ticket. He would probably flip the popular for Kerry though.

John Kerry/Dick Gephardt 49% 263 EV
George W.Bush/Dick Cheney 48% 275 EV

Gephardt brings heft and stamina to Kerry's monotone campaign. Gephardt brings Claire McCaskill on top as MO governor.

Gephardt would have ripped Cheney to pieces in that debate

Why does Kerry lose IA?

Kerry lost Iowa in IRL to Bush, and while it's possible he wins it, Gephardt isn't the best pick to win the state.

Why not? Missouri is close to Iowa and Gephardt had appeal there in the primaries.

If I remember correctly, Kerry won the caucuses. Gephardt finished fourth.
