Massoud's nationalist mujahideen, easily. By default better than the alternatives of the Soviets and the Hekmatyar terrorists.

Is it fair of me to assume that all the people supporting the Soviets are also Assad supporters?

The Soviet Union's getting tangled up in this morass and embarrassed internationally was one of the key events the led to its end, which probably saved countless millions of lives over the three decades since.  Whatever may have happened in Afghanistan and Pakistan since is, honestly, a small price to pay.  I'd happily trade Nepal or Mongolia becoming another Afghanistan if it meant we could break up and destroy the People's Republic of China.

Regardless of the larger geopolitical implications of how the conflict turned out the Soviets were clearly in the wrong and the aggressors for invading.

The Taliban were the bad guys until 2001, at which point they became the good guys.

Not very sympathetic to the USSR, but how did its breakup save millions of lives? Also China's very different from the USSR considering its 90% ethnic Han. You are better off hoping for Chinese democratization not balkanization-even if somehow Xinjiang and Tibet (both of which have large ethnic Han populations anyways) achieved independence, China's core demographic and economic heartlands would remain under its sway.
