So, as I said in the introduction thread, this bill is a bit vague and too abrasive to the South, so to remedy this, I propose the following amendment (to replace the bill in its entirety)

Quote
John Brown Commeration Act

SECTION I: STATUE

1. A statue of 15 feet tall, built of silver shall be constructed on the steps of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse, the official meeting place of the Lincoln Council
2. The statue shall have at its feet at a distance of 3 feet away, a bronze plaque commemorating John Brown's actions as an abolitionist in the 1850's.

SECTION II: HOLIDAY

1. October 16, the day of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry is declared a regional holiday throughout Lincoln. Neither schools nor businesses are required to remain open on this day.

SECTION III: HONORS

1. John Brown is posthumously inducted into the Lincoln Hall of Fame.

SECTION IV:

1. These provisions shall begin to take effect one week after this law is signed by the governor

So, this amendment makes this more of a bill and also removes the very abrasive and antagonizing language towards the South.

Also 24 hours to object to this amendment

John Brown is a national hero, love this bill, he should be celebrated in all regionsl! Instead of government funding, I can even make a donation from my millions of dollars in leftover campaign funds!! Smiley

John Brown is indeed a national hero and while I have already voiced my general opposition to statues, I am completely in favor of erecting statues of people who killed racists. I would rather have a statue of a good person than a bad person.

I support this.

Isn't John Brown an uh, controversial figure for his means?

Kind of, his actions in Kansas may have been, but Southern whites were doing the same things in Kansas, and sometimes even worse, so then we have to take into account motives. He was doing this as an abolitionist who desired to ultimately liberate an entire race of people who had been unjustly enslaved, while Southern whites were doing this to preserve the status quo of slavery. To me, violence seems acceptable to fight the scourge of slavery, since slaveowners were doing the same, and this says nothing of the horrid conditions that slaves were kept it in. 20RP12 put it best: You would rather have a statue of someone who killed racists than someone who was a racist and was killing abolitionists.
